ExplicaciónLa Catedral y los Toros tal vez sea un título un tanto sui generis para un ensayo histórico dedicado a la fiesta de los toros.La Catedral por ser un emblema casi ecuménico, sacralizado, perteneciente per se, a los tapatíos, término utilizado entre otras cosas, para señalar un gentilicio propio de los nacidos en Guadalajara.Los Toros, como significante de un evento también emblemático de la segunda ciudad más importante de México.Guadalajara la de la Catedral y Guadalajara la de Los Toros. Dos emblemas y una tradición.La Catedral de Guadalajara con sus dos alcatraces inversos, a manera de torres, o inmensa cornamenta de burel, una edificación naciente casi con la propia fundación de la ciudad. Las corridas de toros tapatías, nacientes también con las primeras etapas de aquella fundación. Aunque a decir verdad, poco se habla en el texto de La Catedral de Guadalajara, más bien dicho, no se habla de ella. Con escasos antecedentes bibliográficos a propósito del tema, con limitados recursos, mejor dicho sin recurso alguno, solamente con la voluntad por darle a la bibliografía taurina un trabajo digno, bien documentado, metodológicamente construido y de interés para el entendido y también para el neófito, se han logrado conjuntar en este documento, los casi cuatro siglos de microhistoria, acerca de un hecho sociocultural verídico, mismo que ha dado sustento a una identidad. La identidad taurina de los tapatíos.El hilo conductor de la historia narrada, es la propia historia de Guadalajara de la cual se incluyen matices a lo largo de cada episodio descrito. Para esto, ha sido fundamental, la documentación recabada en los diferentes acervos, cosa nada fácil si tenemos en consideración, que no existe en ellos, una clasificación específica al respecto del tema "Corridas de Toros". El abundamiento mostrado en el desarrollo de cada uno de los temas, dependió precisamente de la cantidad o escasez de material localizado. Aunque casi puedo tener la certeza, de no haber dejado papel, acta, periódico, libro, documento, testimonio etcétera, sin revisión, en los sitios elegidos para la búsqueda.Debo por esto, agradecer en primera instancia, la desinteresada colaboración de la Lic. María Eugenia Barrios, bibliógrafa del acervo de los fondos especiales del Archivo Histórico de la Universidad de Guadalajara quien reconociéndome como estudioso del tema, me informó acerca de la mayor parte de los manuscritos inéditos, sin clasificar incluso, correspondientes a la época colonial principalmente del siglo XVIII.La señora Magdelena Canellas Anoz, directora del Archivo General de Indias en Sevilla, España, agilizó de manera eficiente la localización y posterior envío de la documentación por mi solicitada y previamente localizada en los catálogos ubicados en el Instituto Ignacio Dávila Garibi de la Cámara de Comercio de Guadalajara. La documentalia inédita, corresponde al siglo XVII. Posteriormente visité el mencionado archivo, en el cual localicé valiosa información, mapas y planos principalmente recibiendo del personal que ahí labora, un trato sumamente cordial y eficiente. ¡Muchas Gracias!. La Señora Isabel Barriga Díaz, bibliotecaria de El Colegio de Michoacán, estuvo siempre atenta a mis solicitudes, mostrándose como una excelente y desinteresada colaboradora e incondicional amiga, enviando puntualmente el material requerido, en especial fondos de hemeroteca y la copia de algún ejemplar de edición agotada perteneciente al acervo de dicha institución. Gracias por ello. La licenciada Susana Pacheco Díaz, directora del Archivo Histórico Municipal de Guadalajara, en todo momento, se mostró atenta y con disposición a brindarme la información solicitada, fue valiosa su colaboración y eficiente el trabajo de localización de la documentación requerida, por parte del personal a su cargo.
