About the Book
"Rocket Plane" provides vignettes of actions taken by the aerospace sector over the last 60 years. The author participated as a pioneer in the successive blossomings of the Atomic Age, the Guided Missile Age, and the Space Age. The book covers his pre-engineering life at college at Cornell and in the Navy during WW II; his time in post war grad school at NYU; his work on the atomic bomb in New Mexico; followed successively by jobs in Southern California in the guided missile field at Convair/Pomona and then in space endeavors at Aerojet/Azusa and later at TRW in Redondo Beach, with a stint as a Professor/Department Head at Iowa State University in between. He concluded his technical career by retirement from teaching at the University of Southern California, while, as Chief Engineer, helping Microcosm, Inc. get off the ground; then, while occasionally consulting, moving into the twilight zone, where some interesting consulting and travel adventures took place, and where he started writing and publishing books. Robert F. Brodsky is a pioneer in both spacecraft design and the teaching of astronautics. He is listed in "Who's Who in -America", -Engineering and Science" and, -American Education". Until his retirement in 1996, he was a professor of astronautical engineering at the University of Southern California. During his career, he has held executive engineering positions at Sandia Corporation, Aerojet, Convair, TRW Space and Technology and Microcosm, Inc.. He was named Outstanding Aerospace Educator(AIAA/ASEE) and University Professor of the Year (ASAE), among many honors. Since the author participated, both as a player and a teacher, in the successive blossomings of the Aviation Age, the Atomic Age, the Guided Missile Age, and the Space Age, he is here providing a kaleidoscope of high points in accomplishments and failures as they occurred. Dr. Robert F. Brodsky is listed in "Who's Who in -America", -Engineering and Science" and, -American Education". he was a professor of astronautical engineering at the University of Southern California, and-prior to that - was Professor and Head of the Aero. E. Department at Iowa State University. He has held executive engineering positions at Sandia Corporation, Aerojet, Convair, TRW, and Microcosm, Inc. Now in semi-retirement, he writes books (this is his 5th), gives lectures, and occasionally consults.
About the Author: Dr. Robert F. Brodsky, retired from TRW Space and Technology (1980-1988) and the University of Southern California (1981-1996), is a Fellow of AIAA (American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics) and a national Outstanding Aerospace Educator Award winner. His 46 year career in aerospace started in 1949 at Sandia Corporation, where he was responsible for the aerodynamic design of most of our early atomic bombs and the first H-bomb. He was Chief of Aerodynamics at Convair/Pomona; Chief Engineer of Space-General and Paris-based Manager of European Operations for Aerojet-General; and, before TRW where he was a Senior Systems Engineer/Program Manager and Director, Technology Planning, he was Professor and Head of the Aerospace Engineering Department at Iowa State University (1971-80), where he introduced pioneering courses in space systems design and techniques of remote sensing from space. He was Adjunct Professor of Aerospace Engineering at USC from 1981-1996, and continues as Prof. (ret.) of Astronautical Engineering. In February 2012, he was cited by the President of USC for his work in Astronautical Engineering education and industry practice. He holds a BME degree from Cornell University ('46), an MS Math from the University of New Mexico('57), an M. Aeron. E. from NYU('48), and a Doctor of Science in Engineering degree from NYU ('50). He served in the US Navy in WW2. He is listed in "Who's Who in - America"; - in the World"; - in Engineering and Science"; and in -American Education". He is presently engaged as an author, a consultant, a sailor, a lecturer and, until January 2012, the Secretary/Historian of the South Bay New Orleans Jazz Club. Of his five books, two encompass stories from his engineering life; two are about traditional jazz music, and one includes stories and musings from his life: Titles are (see Amazon.com/books): ON THE CUTTING EDGE (Annals of Engineering) ISBN 10-1-884092-62-6.
