In my initial announcement of this great Collection, I mentioned that it was the property of one of the best known, respected, and admired collectors of America.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Mr. Grinnell for a quarter of a century. And although I have had the pleasure of handling a major portion of all the great collections offered in this country in the past forty years, I doubt if any of them gave me greater satisfaction in handling as the satisfaction I am deriving in this instance, in serving my esteemed friend, Mr. Grinnell.

Albert A. Grinnell was born June 12, 1865, in Shelby, Orleans County, New York. His interest in numismatics began at the age of eleven, while assisting his father in a general country store, and he has continued this interest.

After completing his education at the Rochester Business Uni versity, Mr. Grinnell established the A. A. Grinnell Retail Coal (s: Lumber Yard at Oakfield, N. Y. Several years later he built large grain elevators and warehouses for the handling of farm products.

Mr. Grinnell was married in 1888 to Helen A. Avery, who passed away in February, 1931.

In 1910 Mr. Grinnell moved to Detroit and became associated with Grinnell Brothers Music House. In 1912, when the company was incorporated, he was made Vice President and later became Presi dent, which Office he held until his retirement from active business.

While Mr. Grinnell's interest in numismatics has always been and is general, his main love, for a number of years, has been the United States Currency, of which he has acquired one of the most complete collections ever formed. He is a most discriminating collector and a student of the subject. And today, as for many years past, he is regarded as one of the foremost authorities on the subject. His interest in coins alone is by no means small, as is evidenced by the splendid collection here offered.
