About the Book

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

This is the National Prize for Spanish Letters, Bernardo Atxaga's, new novel.
It is a story of many lives that, just like water, run through stones.

In Ugarte, Basque Country, a boy who returned from a boarding school in the south of France without being able to speak, one summer recovers his ability to speak thanks to his friendship with two twin brothers and also thanks to something strange that the three discovered in the waters of a canal that comes down from a mountain. The Franco dictatorship is reaching its last days. Everything is changing in Ugarte and also in the El Pardo military base where Eliseo, Donato, Celso, and Caloco tried to train a magpie as they trespassed the hunting field reserved for the powerful. Theirs was also a story of friendship with its fair dose of rebellion, tragedy, and being reckless.

Years later, union strikes shook Ugarte's mining industry. It is now the turbulent eighties, and Eliseo and the twins are involved in a plot of revenge that seems to be typical of a black genre thriller. Time goes by quickly and transforms everything that comes from abroad: new type of music arrives, television, and email.

With this exciting novel held together by friendship, love of nature, and the immensity of death, Atxaga once again shows his mastery in creating territories and characters that are impossible to forget.
