Corren los primeros meses del año 1975, en lo profundo de la selva, entre El Guaniamo y el Cuchivero, en el Distrito Cedeño de Caicara del Orinoco, al este de La Salvación y en una zona denominada El Milagro, se acaba de descubrir lo que los mineros denominan una bomba diamantífera. Pronto a la luz de la noticia invaden la zona más de diez mil gambusinos, la mayoría ilegales procedentes de Colombia, Brasil, La Guayana y aunque menos, también de República Dominicana y Venezuela.

Se produce entonces una situación donde la ambición, la violencia y el oscuro contrabando de diamantes hace tremendamente peligrosa e incierta la vida en estos lugares. Ante lo anterior el Gobierno militariza la zona y envía a un contingente de Cazadores de la VI División de infantería, pero la situación de lucha salvaje por la riqueza no amaina, el alcohol, el juego y la prostitución son los únicos pasatiempos, y los asesinatos se suceden sin que la presencia de los soldados cambie gran cosa y sea lo suficientemente disuasoria. Es en este escenario que llega, enviado por el Miami Herald, Federico Córdova, se trata de un periodista de origen cubano que trabaja free lance para varias publicaciones del sur de la Florida, Federico viene para reseñar el descubrimiento y hacer un reportaje sobre la vida en la zona, pero la principal razón detrás de su viaje es la huida lo más lejos posible de un oscuro asunto de deudas de juego sin pagar y por el que lo persiguen para matarlo

Su llegada coincide con la muerte casi seguida de dos mineros y la desaparición misteriosa del teniente que mandaba la guarnición, lo anterior da lugar a todo tipo de rumores, pero hay uno en especial que enciende la imaginación y la fantasía de los mineros, se trata de que alguien, con seguridad el primero de los muertos, había descubierto un Diamante extraordinario, mucho más grande que el mítico Barrabás, que había sido el de más quilates encontrado hasta la fecha en la zona. Ese Diamante fabuloso, que nadie ha visto hasta ahora, estaría pasando en estos momentos de mano en mano, y su dueño actual, el asesino sin duda, estaría tratando de sacarlo subrepticiamente del Milagro por los caminos verdes hacia un destino desconocido pero hacia donde la identidad del propietario no importa y el diamante seguro se cotizará el doble o el triple.

La búsqueda del supuesto Diamante se intensifica, el nuevo teniente que ha llegado comandando el pelotón de relevo lo busca y también a su antecesor, el equipo de filmación husmea alrededor del asunto, y los hombres de Signore Guido y los de Carles Viver, no dejan piedra sobre piedra sin remover y vigilan constantemente los alrededores de la choza de Joao.

Pero, y estas son las preguntas que se hace Federico ¿Existe realmente ese fabuloso y misterioso Diamante? ¿Quién lo tiene? ¿Quién es el asesino o los asesinos? ¿Continúa aún en el Milagro o ya se marchó por los caminos verdes hacia Manaos o hacia Cúcuta? ¿Por qué todo el mundo parece asumir que él está en el secreto? ¿Será esta la gran oportunidad de pagar las deudas que lo acogotan y el comienzo de una nueva vida? La narración finalmente va dando respuesta a estas y otras preguntas que van surgiendo a lo largo de la trama, y lo hace de manera sorprendente en un final inesperado que viene a dar la razón una vez más al refrán popular castellano que dice "A quien por codicia la vida aventura, las más de las veces el bien poco dura"
