NUEVA EDICIÓN CORREGIDA (Julio 2016) Es La Casa de la Troya (1915) uno de los grandes best-sellers del siglo XX, pues ronda el centenar de ediciones, ha sido traducida a diversos idiomas, llevada con éxito al teatro en varias ocasiones y al cine en cinco, y hasta convertida en Zarzuela. Y no es de extrañar porque esta novela cuenta con los ingredientes necesarios para atraer al gran público: intriga, tensión, una historia perfectamente estructurada, unos personajes cabalmente perfilados, un retrato fiel de la España de finales del siglo XIX con aquella sociedad de clases perfectamente diferenciadas, y la espectacular descripción tanto de una interesante ciudad universitaria de provincias (nada menos que Santiago de Compostela) como de su afamada universidad y su característico ambiente estudiantil.. La Casa de la Troya recoge los tópicos propios del ambiente universitario de aquella rancia España. Pero -lo que es más importante- genera otros nuevos que serán, precisamente, los más característicos de las décadas posteriores a su publicación. De modo que no es que la novela se pareciera (que se parecía) a aquella sociedad que retrataba, sino que además, lo que no se parecía acabó por parecerse. Tan notable fue su influencia en la realidad española de entonces que ni las estudiantinas ni las tunas de mitad del siglo XX hubieran sido como fueron sin esta singular narración. Y, por supuesto, en tal contexto, y como hilo conductor, una historia de amor con problemas y enemigos: la del joven madrileño (Gerardo Roquer) al que su padre lo había alejado del pernicioso ambiente de la Villa y Corte mandándolo a Santiago para terminar allí sus estudios de leyes, de un lado, y la de la muchacha bien y de buena clase, de provincias (Carmiña Castro Retén), modelo de belleza, bondad y buenas formas, de otro. Gerardo aterrizará en este ambiente compostelano yendo a parar a la posada de la viuda de un Capitán de Carabineros, conocida como la Casa de la Troya: -¿Dónde para usted este año? -En la posada de la Troya. -¿En casa de doña Generosa? ¡Arrenegote demo! Usted era el único que faltaba allí. Y es que "viven allí los puntos más traviesos de la Universidad. Verdaderos estudiantes de la tuna, ¿sabes? Todos rapaces de buenas familias, no vayas a creer; pero unos paveros, siempre dispuestos a divertirse y a jugársela al Sol. Ya verás. ¡Te hay cada volante!... " Pero no, la casa de la Troya no debe su nombre a doña Generosa, sino a la calle en que estaba y sigue estando ubicada, pues "aquí tenemos una afición loca a la elipsis, y cuando se trata de nombrar cualquier vía de la ciudad abreviamos usando simplemente su nombre". Gerardo enseguida se prendará, como todos, de la belleza de Carmiña a quien intentará seducir para entretener su transitorio alejamiento del atractivo y depravado ambiente madrileño. Claro, que la muchacha marcará perfectamente las distancias justas para forjar en Gerardo un impetuoso amor que le cambiará de vida y mentalidad y hasta le hará apartarse de las juergas estudiantiles. Será entonces cuando harán su aparición los otros enemigos de ese amor, los verdaderos enemigos: los malvados Maragotas, que querrán a la muchacha y a su fortuna para su Octavio, empleando para ello todos los ardides necesarios, secuestro de la doncella incluido. Quizá la fuerza narrativa oculta de esta novela estriba, precisamente, en ser un trasunto de historias y personajes reales, pues el propio Pérez Lugín era madrileño y estudió leyes en Santiago. Y la misma Carmiña hunde sus raíces en Carmen Carballeira, antigua novia de Lugín, que se hizo monja y vivió muchos años en el Convento de la Enseñanza. Tanto éxito y tanta influencia, tuvieron su reflejo en un sonoro premio de la Real Academia Española. Y es que la novela está impregnada de mucha realidad, demasiada realidad.
