"Cartoons por un Fulano de Tal" no es un libro común. Su autor, Armando Caicedo, es un galardonado novelista y columnista de sátira política, al que la vida le exigió "correr una milla adicional" ser caricaturista.

En este libro -ilustrado a todo color- se recopila una muestra de 120 de sus "cartoons" editoriales publicados en El Tiempo Latino, el semanario en español de The Washington Post.

Las noticias son la fuente natural de sus historias. Caicedo selecciona las más destacadas, para combinarlas luego con los hilos multicolores del humor y la sátira para así bordar, con textos e ilustraciones, su paquete semanal de humor editorial.

A la pregunta "¿en quién se inspira para crear sus caricaturas editoriales?", el autor declara: "en Mark Twain, porque este güey tuvo la osadía de descubrir la clave del oficio: «Con las vacas sagradas se preparan las mejores hamburguesas»".

La característica más destacada de este libro es que las caricaturas que aquí se aprecian fueron creadas por un periodista de ascendencia hispana, exiliado en Estados Unidos. Es que en este gran país -que es el hogar del mayor número de angloparlantes en el mundo- Caicedo mete la cucharada para interpretar el sentir de la inmensa comunidad hispana, que, de manera simultánea, ha hecho del mismo país, el segundo con mayor número de hispanohablantes en el mundo, superado apenas por México. "Pienso mis caricaturas en español y las dibujo en latín", explica Caicedo, para enfatizar en el complejo problema cultural de traducir el humor de una lengua a cualquier otra. La estructura de una frase para producir un efecto cómico, es diferente cuando se construye en español que cuando se construye en inglés.

En la versión de Caicedo: "la caricatura de una caricatura es una caricatura creada para un público angloparlante y traducida al español". Para caricaturizar su frase agrega: "el patético resultado es como si el mismo Cervantes hubiera traducido "El Quijote" al inglés, utilizando el "Google Translator".

Resulta interesante apreciar también, cómo en cada caricatura publicada en este libro, se evidencia el poder de la síntesis. "La competencia más ruda que mantengo es con mi editor, que publica sus textos -ahí no más- en mi "frontera sur", porque un dibujo y una simple línea de texto en una caricatura política, te obligan a reflexionar más rápido, que un pulido, brillante y largo editorial".

Para concluir, Caicedo confiesa, en voz alta, su militancia profesional: "soy miembro de la AAEC, de la NAHJ, galardonado tres veces por la NAHP y aunque tolerante de nacimiento, aún me resisto a afiliarme a la LGBTI" (*)
