About the Book

Como escribe el profesor italiano Gianluca Mori en su epilogo, esta Carta de Trasibulo a Leucipa, anonima durante tanto tiempo y ahora atribuida a Nicolas Freret, ocupa un lugar de primer orden en la literatura clandestina del siglo XVIII "tanto por su compromiso filosofico radical y por la riqueza de su documentacion historica como por la sutileza literaria y antropologica de sus observaciones sobre el significado de la experiencia religiosa". El responsable de la edicion moderna de esta obra, el filosofo Sergio Landucci, afirma que "de todos los manuscritos clandestinos del siglo XVIII frances, la Carta de Trasibulo a Leucipa es, sin duda, el mas sustancioso desde el punto de vista filosofico". Nicolas Freret (Paris, 1688-1749) fue uno de los eruditos franceses mas cultos de su epoca. Proximo al regente Felipe de Orleans, preceptor en casa del duque de Noailles, mas tarde secretario perpetuo de la Academie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres, fue un historiador de las religiones y uno de los primeros sinologos occidentales. Se intereso por las mitologias antiguas y la escritura china y publico sus escritos en el boletin de la Academia. A causa de un discurso sobre el origen de los francos, fue denunciado por difamador de la monarquia y paso seis meses en la Bastilla (1714-1715). Pero Freret era, asimismo, un hombre independiente, un pensador libre. Lo que no era posible publicar con su nombre se difundio en manuscritos clandestinos, buscados con avidez por los lectores interesados. Asi sucedio con esta Carta de Trasibulo a Leucipa, que permanecio inedita hasta que, casi 15 anos despues de la muerte de su presunto autor, Holbach la hizo imprimir en Amsterdam en la imprenta de su editor Marc-Michel Rey (1765). La comparacion entre el contenido y estilo de la Carta y los escritos eruditos publicados por Freret en vida llevan a la conclusion de que este es el autor indudable de la Carta. Freret imagina a dos personajes de ficcion que viven en el siglo I en un area apartada del Imperio romano. Quien escribe esta extensa carta que es el libro es Trasibulo. A lo largo de el libro trata de convencer a su amiga Leucipa de que no se deje arrastrar por esa religion que se estaba poniendo entonces de moda, el cristianismo, y le da toda una serie de argumentos muy razonados no solo sobre su falsedad, sino sobre la falsedad de todas las religiones y de la idea de Dios. Holbach seguiria este modelo en sus Cartas a Eugenia, publicadas en esta misma coleccion. Gianluca Mori (1960) es profesor de Historia de la filosofia moderna en la Universidad del Piamonte Oriental, Italia. Ha publicado varios libros, entre ellos Bayle philosophe (Champion, 1999), Philosophes sans Dieu, en colaboracion con A. Mothu (Champion, 2005) y L’ateismo dei moderni. Filosofia e negazione di Dio da Spinoza a d’Holbach (Carocci, 2016). Natalia L. Zorrilla (Buenos Aires, 1987) es doctora en Filosofia por la Universidad de Buenos Aires. Se dedica al estudio del ateismo, el movimiento ilustrado y la obra de las mujeres filosofas de la modernidad. Es secretaria de redaccion de la revista Siglo Dieciocho y autora de Sade (Galerna, 2022). Bernat Castany Prado (Barcelona, 1977), traductor del libro, es profesor de Literatura Hispanoamericana y Estudios Literarios en la Universidad de Barcelona. Es autor de varios libros, como Que nada se sabe. El escepticismo en la obra de Jorge Luis Borges. En 2021 ha quedado finalista del Premio Anagrama de Ensayo con el libro Una filosofia del miedo. Colabora regularmente en El Pais y otros medios. Es colaborador habitual de esta coleccion.
