About the Book

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Mysterious, dark, brilliant, full of irony, and impossible to put down: this new installment starring commissioner Montalbano wraps the reader in a climate of relentless psychological suspense and undisputedly confirms Camilleri as a master of the dark novel genre.

In Vigata, Sicily, on an empty street, a woman in her thirties is abducted, drugged with chloroform, and abandoned without any harm or robbery, which was the same thing that happened days before to Enzo's niece, the owner of Salvo Montalbano's favorite trattoria. Things they have in common are age and the fact that they both work in bank branches.

A few days later, another young woman is kidnapped in the same manner, but this time released with thirty superficial cuts all throughout her body except her face. And coinciding with these strange events, a fire caused by arson partially destroys a store whose owner and his girlfriend have disappeared without a trace.

All the facts point to a mafia, but even though time has passed, Montalbano hasn't lost an iota of his keen sense to decipher the small details and unveil all hidden motivations. When everything points to a particular explanation that is more than obvious, his use of impeccable logic leads the commissioner to a much more complex reality, a network of perversions, betrayals, and revenges.
