About the Book

Companion book to the Trails series, it is a story complete in itself. Carolyn Smyth-Johnson bid her best friend, Rachel Nathan, farewell when the Nathans left their grand mansion in Boston for the Oregon Trail in the mid 1850s. Carolyn's snobbishness had alienated her to the point of having driven everyone away, except for Rachel, who was now gone. Out of boredom and loneliness, Carolyn began attending church and soon learned to know Jesus as her Savior. The story opens with her family learning about her faith and becoming outraged, insisting that she recant her faith or be disinherited. Choosing disinheritance, Carolyn now finds herself thrust out of the family, and out of Boston, being given a one-way ticket to Virginia with only what treasures she can carry in her trunk. Not having been prepared for anything but a life of ease, Carolyn is now faced with having to make a living for herself. Can she make it on her own? "Help me, Lord," she prays. "I have no idea what to do now."
About the Author: Sally Hull wrote her first novel at age seventeen and has gone on to write over forty books. She writes in a variety of genres, since she enjoys reading a variety of stories. After graduating from Gladwin High School in Michigan, she studied at Toronto Baptist Seminary in Canada, as well as Mid Michigan Community College and Central Michigan University. After a variety of teaching jobs in America, Sally traveled to China to teach English to college students one year and grade school children the following year. She earned her TESOL license as well. After teaching, she returned to writing. Living in Montana with her husband Charlie, who is a photographer and writer in his own right, Sally continues writing, hoping to be an encouragement to others, helping them to know God better. Sally speaks about the book Carolyn's Story: "I introduced Carolyn Smyth-Johnson as Rachel Nathan's best friend from Boston in Trails series for the purpose of showing what all Rachel had lost when she ventured out west in a covered wagon, giving up her home and wealth in Boston. But I got to wondering just what happened to Carolyn. What was her story after all? One day I set out to discover that very thing and ended up, some months later with the book I entitled: Carolyn's Story. I love riches-to-rags stories, for it seems like the true person emerges once they have lost everything. This is the case with Carolyn when she is disinherited by her father and sent far from Boston to a small Virginian town where she is forced to make a living for herself, even though she was not trained in the art of anything except being a genteel lady. Between that and her need to figure out how to forgive her father, Carolyn's true self emerges. Since she has landed a job as a baker, and knows nothing at all about baking, I set out to make Carolyn's own recipe of apple dumplings. The dumpling smelled alright, but the taste was quite lacking. It enabled me, however, to describe Carolyn's first attempt at baking, doing my own testing of her recipe. (I would not recommend using Carolyn's recipe.) This book is complete in itself, being a companion book of the series: Trails."
