Il est possible d'assister à la représentation d'un opéra et de s'adonner au plaisir des sens sans se poser une seule question, mais cet ouvrage est conçu pour appréhender une fraction des structures et des mécanismes inhérents à cette forme d'art complexe sans autre prétention que de soulever un coin du voile.Dans un grand nombre d'articles de journaux, de magazines mais également dans des reportages professionnels, Carmen est souvent mentionné comme étant l'opéra français le plus connu. Est-ce bien vrai ? Cet opéra est-il représentatif de la culture française ? Quelles sont les différences entre la nouvelle de Mérimée et l'opéra de Bizet ? Quelques-uns des éléments qui fondent cette étude.Ainsi Carmen personnifierait-elle l'Autre, insondable, dangereux, l'Ouvrier, la Femme fatale libre et menaçante pour la vie familiale, le Bandit. L'Autre, donc, qui doit être soumis sinon détruit ?Serait-ce, dans ce cas, la raison pour laquelle José, ayant commis un meurtre avoué, aurait pu être absous en s'enrôlant dans l'armée et expier de cette façon son crime en liberté jusqu'à ce que retombe les remous du scandale déclenché par son geste, alors que Carmen, pour avoir distribué une balafre à l'une de ses collègues sera envoyée en prison ? Peut-on alors conclure que José représente l'establishment et Carmen les Autres ?D'autre part, c'est tout autant, sinon plus, la provocation de Carmen à l'encontre de Zuniga qui la conduit linea recta en prison. Il est le commandant de son bataillon, comment pourrait-il laisser impuni le fait que Carmen le nargue devant toute la communauté ? C'est à regret qu'il prononce la sentence d'emprisonnement. Trois fois, Zuniga pose la même question à Carmen, trois fois, elle refuse de lui répondre alors qu'il aurait très certainement clos l'incident sans y attacher très grande importance. Quelques centaines de femmes ensemble dans un espace confiné, une chaleur étouffante, quelques mots vifs et les caractères s'enflamment. Pour lui, pas de quoi fouetter un chat, à plus forte raison envoyer l'une des femmes en détention. Ainsi Carmen, la personnification de l'Autre, entre-t-elle en conflit avec l'establishment représenté non pas par José mais, de toute évidence, par Zuniga.On peut lire Carmen comme l'opposition de deux cultures: l'une dominante et l'autre dominée. Il est également irréfutable que l'on peut expliquer l'opéra politiquement en démontant un mécanisme mettant à nu les minorités opprimées; bien entendu, il est tout aussi possible d'en extirper une lance féministe démontrant la misogynie. Toutes ces lectures sont possibles, plausibles et peut-être même sont-elles valables. Il n'en reste pas moins vrai que c'est la musique de Carmen et la musique seule qui est connue dans le monde entier, et il est irréfragable que celle-ci transcende les idées de race, de religion, de politique, de féminisme et de machisme. Carmen la musique, la poésie, de laquelle on ne peut se passer. Il ne le sait que trop bien José qui hurle du début à la fin: Carmen, je t'aime... Ma Carmen adorée .
