Aus Anlass des 200. Geburtstages von Carl Rokitansky wird nicht nur seine zentrale Bedeutung fur die medizinische Wissenschaft, sondern auch sein politisches Wirken und seine Haltung zu Grundsatzfragen erstmals interdisziplinar in einem Sammelband, bearbeitet von Historikern, Medizinhistorikern und Arzten, dokumentiert. Carl Freiherr von Rokitansky (1804-1878) hat mit der von ihm vertretenen Disziplin, der pathologischen Anatomie, Forschung und Lehre der Wiener medizinischen Schule gepragt und nachhaltig bestimmt. Er hat im deutschen Sprachraum fuhrend die pathologische Anatomie zur Grundlage der klinischen Medizin fur Diagnostik und Krankheitslehre gemacht und war 1844 der erste Lehrstuhlinhaber dieses Faches. Mit seinem Eintreten fur Lehr- und Lernfreiheit war er nach 1848 der erste Dekan und 1853 der erste Rektor aus den Reihen der Universitatsprofessoren. 1863 zum Referent der medizinischen Studien im Unterrichtsministerium ernannt, 1850 Mitglied der Medizinalkommission und 1870 Prasident des Obersten Sanitatsrates im Innenministerium, wurde er 1867 ins Herrenhaus des Reichsrats berufen. Seit 1850 Prasident der Gesellschaft der Arzte und seit 1869 Prasident der Akademie der Wissenschaften, der er seit 1848 als Mitglied angehorte, hat er zusatzlich zu seiner medizinischen wissenschaftlichen Arbeit in Reden und Schriften vor allem zu Themen der Bildungs- und Wissenschaftspolitik sowie der medizinischen Ethik Stellung bezogen. Durch die Fuhrungspositionen in verschiedensten akademischen und politischen Institutionen pragte und reprasentierte Carl Freiherr von Rokitansky nicht nur die Wiener medizinische Schule, sondern auch die Ara des osterreichischen Hochliberalismus. Der Sammelband enthalt auch einen Katalogteil zur gleichnamigen Ausstellung mit bisher nicht gezeigten Exponaten aus verschiedenen Archiven und Familienbesitz.
