About the Book

Roberto Cofresí y Ramírez de Arellano, nace el día 12 de junio de 1791, en el pintoresco pueblo de Cabo Rojo, en el literal suroeste de Puerto Rico. Era el hijo menor de don Francisco Cofresí y doña María Germana Ramírez, quienes habían procreado tres hijos más, que correspondían a los nombres de Juana, Juan e Ignacio. Por consentimiento de la historia sabemos que su padre era de Trieste, que era un puerto que para aquellos años pertenecía al Imperio Alemán. Según uno de los más conocidos y distinguido escritores, Ramírez Brau, indica que el sitio exacto de nacimiento era el conocido barrio, Puerto Real, que antes se conocía como Tujao. Se dice que la palabra "Tujao", viene a ser una deformación del inglés "two houses", porque en aquel lugar vivía un inglés que tenía dos casas y el pueblo, al hablar de ellas, españolizaba los vocablos "two houses". A los cuatro años de edad pierde a su madre, y es criado por una tía en el Tujao, cerca de Joyuda. Se desconoce el nombre de la tía, pero se llega a la conclusión que era hermana de su madre. Se indica que desde temprana edad se dio a navegar por las aguas del canal de la mona. Era uno de los amores de Cofresí, el mar, sus hermanos lo aconsejaban, pero su inclinación por las aventuras, iba a ser parte de su vida. El Dr. Ibern Fleytas, que también se interesó en la vida de pirata boricua, nos presenta como un niño subyugado al mar, de voluntad firme y resuelta, carácter inflexible, valor extraordinario, bondades que le ganaban el respeto y simpatía de sus vecinos. Cabo Rojo era un puerto de gran movimiento, propicio a l contrabando, además existían unas salinas que eran explotadas con gran aprovechamiento. Dándole así gran auge al pueblo. Estos relatos de Salvador Brau, indican también que esta situación trajo nuevos pobladores al país, sobre todo marinos extranjeros, que mantenían una población aproximadamente de 1,200 habitantes, de los cuales la mitad eran blancos. El 14 de enero de 1815, Cofresí contrae nupcias con Juana Crithof Hufersé, apellido holandés. Su esposa apenas contaba con 14 años de edad, a los cuatro años de su matrimonio tuvieron su primer hijo, esta fallece al primer año de vida. Un año después les nace una niña, la cual lleva el nombre de Bernardina, la única sobreviviente de la familia Cofresí, porque después nace otro varón, pero fallece el mismo año, 1821. La esposa de Cofresí según datos biográficos, sobrevive al fusilamiento de Roberto Cofresí, falleciendo un año después, la cual fue enterrada en Cabo Rojo, dejando Cofresí huérfana a su hija de cinco años, según el testamento indica funestamente; "no dejó testó por carácter de bienes de fortuna". Su hija Bernardina se casó en Cabo Rojo el 26 de junio de 1839 con José Estanislao Asencio, natural de Cumaná en Costa Firme, este matrimonio procreó ocho hijos, siendo los nietos de Cofresí. Son ellos: José Lucas, María Esterlina, Antonio Salvador, Antonio Luciano, Pablo, Isabel Antonia, María de la Encarnación y Juan Bernardo. Estos datos, fueron dados por Salvador Brau y el Dr. Ibern.
