About the Book

José Antonio Maitín San Juan nació en Puerto Cabello, importante puerto ubicado en la costa central de Venezuela, el 21 de octubre de 1804, en el seno de una familia de ideas patriotas. Es, sin duda, famoso por su Canto fúnebre a la memoria de su esposa. No hay en los años en que apareció (1851) una elegía que la aventaje por su sinceridad, dulzura y sencillez.Una vez finalizada la emancipación, precisamente en las primeras décadas de la naciente república, el arte, las ciencias y la literatura salen del atraso en la que habían estado sumidos los pueblos americanos. Los escritores trabajan por su independencia social, cultural y literaria. Ese esfuerzo conllevó la indudable aceptación de todo lo que conformaba el espacio americano. Se descubren así hombres y cosas que no eran sólo de España, sino que formaban parte de un patrimonio mucho más amplio. Se lee a Madame de Stäel y a Chautebriand, cuyo Romanticismo consistía preferentemente en exaltar los valores del sentimiento; a Musset, a la poesía dulce y resignada de Lamartine, a Victor Hugo, entre los franceses, y al Duque de Rivas, a Espronceda y los versos musicales y sugestivos de José Zorrilla, entre los españoles. Así que, en un primer momento, estos autores representaron el modelo que colmará las aspiraciones de la joven literatura venezolana. La poesía de Maitín no podía quedar fuera de la corriente del romanticismo hispanoamericano que, durante la fase liberalizadora de la dominación española, instaura un nexo entre la imagen de la mujer con la esfera privada y pública. Una época exaltadora, pero también confundida la que le tocó vivir al poeta venezolano y a los romanticistas de su generación, los cuales atestiguaron en sus escritos el desarrollo incongruente y contradictorio de la sociedad y de la política venezolana, verdadero laberinto en el que por mucho tiempo permanecieron atrapados los proyectos de reforma auspiciados. Es por ello que toda la literatura romántica venezolana está ligada a ese preciso momento histórico en el que se aspira crear nuevos mecanismos que puedan regir el orden de las leyes en el naciente Estado y acelerar de esta manera el proceso de afirmación venezolano. Por consiguiente, se puede considerar al romanticismo maitiniano de esos años como un triunfo de la imaginación poética sobre la prosa del mundo, lo que permitió contemplar la realidad proveedora de materiales adaptables a las transformaciones actualizadoras del poeta.
