About the Book

The Camel King When two British children go with their mother to pick up a letter from their father, Ambassador in Egypt, Mr. Bernard, the mail clerk hearing about their trip, tells them about the White Talking Camel that has roamed in the desert from Morocco to Cairo for a thousand years. Onboard the Castle-One, the children hear its captain saying even more stories about the Talking Camel; all known to mariners from African countries. On the largest English ship the Castle-One, Peter, and Sarah, the two siblings begin a serendipitous trip as the Castle-One cruises the Ocean seeking Hercules Strait at the tip of Portugal; from there they stop at Tunis for a one-night rest and as the children roam the market, a cruel man harshly whips an old camel fallen to the ground tired and overburdened with goods on its back. At the cruelty of the man punishing the camel mother and her baby camel whining sadly, both Peter and Sarah protest throwing oranges at the man. The man hit at the face walks to whip the children, but he's stopped in time by the Captain behind.Moments later desert thieves stampede into the market kidnapping children and robbing merchants. Peter and Sarah are taken into a caravan of desert thieves, but the Talking Camel roaming the desert joins the caravan coming to rescue them. Days later, they see the camel they ride on winking an eye at them and hear him talking to them and plan their escape. Escaping from the thieves, they go through the deserts from Morocco to the pyramids of Giza by the river Nile in Egypt. Thus, the camel plans their escape from the raptors but fleeing into the desert, they face the perils of dying of heat and thirst, the Talking Camel explains, and the children accept the challenge. The Talking Camel, a Prince in his own world, and having accidentally fallen on to the earth, must find the door to return home; a door opened for him for some time only while the children wishing to return home too must find their parents. But they also must have the other children kidnapped as well, and one by one, the children ride on the Talking Camel for one moment to grant each a wish and send them flying home. When all children are sent home, Peter and Sarah refuse to go and instead travel with the Talking Camel to find the door for him to return to his Constellation.Magically, the Talking Camel sends all kidnapped children home where they belong, but not before all children become friends. At night around a fire, under the care of the Talking Camel looking after them, they tell their own stories while the camel translates for them, and all children understand each other's stories and laughing merrily. When the children are sent out home, the Talking Camel shares two magical marbles with Peter and Sarah; by holding a marble each, the children can communicate also if separated and talk to him as well, the camel says While escaping the camel tells the children about his home and past mistakes and how flying above his own limits and disregarding the counsel from his parents sent, his high flying sent him tumbling down to their planet. Peter, Sarah, and camel travel for many weeks and arrive in Egypt. There, they enter an abandoned barn seeking to rest, but a beggar hiding sleeping in already in the barn, hear the children and the Talking Camel; he hears the camel talking and his secret. Knowing well the legend about the Talking Camel, the beggar tricks the kind little Sarah saying Peter gone to the market is in trouble. Sarah asks the camel to allow the one-legged beggar to ride on his back to the market. The Talking Camel says yes, but the beggar's ride on its back, knowing the camel's name makes the beggar the camel's new Master.
