About the Book

Calling An Angel is authored by Richard de Montebello. Calling An Angel is an uplifting, religious-based family-oriented comedy about Gabriel, a man no body knows who enters the sleepy little town of Safe Haven, Virginia, goes to the medical walk in facility and says to the two nurses at the reception desk, "Could you please tell the doctor that his Angel is here to see him." The question is: is Gabriel a real Angel, a conman or someone who is just plain nuts? Catholic Fiction Calling An Angel is written for young adults. At the first of the book this seems very evident to the reader. The language and sentence structure is set so that the young reader can immediately grasp, understand and get interested in the story line. So, I put my adolescent mind track in and started to read. Before I knew it, I was very engaged with the tale of Gabriel, who may or may not be an angel, depending on how you look at it. The story is attention-grabbing and absolutely funny in parts. It should be noted, there is one brief dialogue at the opening of the book where Gabriel, to prove he is an angel, repeats the words another character used during a recent love encounter with her boyfriend. That being said, this is very short, has significance to the story line, and is the only passage in the book that may not be effective in grabbing the reader into the story even further. Still, I feel it is not a reason to turn this book away. It has such goodness and entertainment in it, it should be encouraged. The characters are realistic, and any one reading this book cannot help but laugh along the way one episode gets tangled, reaching into the next. Gabriel keeps it all connected. There is even an element of suspense when clues arise that something drastic is about to happen, though no evidence is given of what it could be. The characters interact within the story line and each one has his or her place. Sometimes good intentions just go wrong, but if we keep at it, the story suggests, leave it to God, things will work out to the solution best for everyone. Not a bad lesson to learn. I thought Calling an Angel was very well written and enjoyed reading it very much. I guess all of us have a little bit of youth left in us at times, and reading such a lively, fun book was an adventure I just might try again sometime very soon. reviewed by Jody Rakis
