About the Author: Calvin Washington was born into a life of poverty that most of us would find incredible. At age 6, he was picking cotton in the hot, unforgiving Texas sun, working 13 hours a day. Water for drinking, bathing and washing clothes, came from a well about 50 yards away, by using a tin bucket. He used an outhouse and bathed in a galvanized tub of cold water. In the late 1960's, he finally had an indoor toilet. He never used the phone because there was none to use. Extreme poverty and cultural barriers were a part of daily life. He wanted to be free of cotton, poverty, racism, social injustice and oppression. He found a book at school on Black History. As he worked in the cotton field, hauled hay and gutted turkeys, he read that book over and over. He learned from Harriet Tubman and Fredrick Douglass, to never give up on his dreams. He knew there had to be something better to life than the existence he had. College was the only means of escape he could imagine. His dedication and determination to achieve that goal was unshakable and eventually became undeniable. As a high school valedictorian, he won a scholarship to Prairie View A&M University. Overcoming the enormous challenges of attending college from a substandard educational system, based on prejudice and racism, Calvin Washington successfully graduated from Prairie View A&M University with an ROTC background and went to the Army as a second lieutenant. He won a Martin Luther King Jr. fellowship to attend Howard University Law School. As a result of his stellar academic achievement, he was given the honor of writing for the Howard Law Journal. After graduating from law school, he became a member of the State Bar of Texas. He has excelled in life and is currently a Federal Administrative Law Judge and a great distance from the cotton fields!
