En su nueva novela titulada AL CALCE, el escritor puertorriqueño Gean Carlo Villegas, parte de una cita u oración que Vladimir Nabokov escribió en la novela Pale Fire: "If I correctly understand the sense of this succinct observation, our poet suggests here that human life is but a series of footnotes to a vast obscure unfinished masterpiece." Como todos saben, una nota al calce consiste de una advertencia, explicación, comentario, noticia o información de cualquier clase que se coloca en los márgenes o al final de la página para ampliar la discusión de algo fuera del plano que nos permite el texto principal. Como es de esperarse en cualquier texto narrativo de Villegas, Al Calce es una novela donde abunda la metaliteratura, la literatura que él ha llamado seudo-autoreferencial, los juegos literarios como el "cut and paste" y el "mash-up" y el revisionismo histórico que tan de moda está en el siglo 21. Por otro lado Villegas experimenta artísticamente con el concepto de que la vida humana (e inevitablemente la literatura) no es mas que una serie de notas AL CALCE de una vasta y obscura obra maestra sin terminar. Los que conocen la literatura de Villegas sabrán que algunas partes de los capítulos de Al Calce fueron, en su origen, cuentos que recibieron premios o menciones de honor en diversos certámenes literarios como tercer capítulo que recibió una mención Honorífica en el Segundo Certamen Literario de la Facultad de Humanidades del Recinto de Rio Piedras de la Universidad de Puerto Rico el 3 de abril de 2014 (el jurado estuvo compuesto por los escritores Melanie Pérez Ortiz, Janette Becerra y Juan López Bauzá). En Al Calce los temas y los personajes son diversos. Nos llama la atención que uno de los personajes es Filiberto Ojeda Rios, quien, para algunos, será una nota al calce en la historia puertorriqueña. Los lectores podrán encontrar discusiones acerca de, (la masturbación, el aborto, la pedofilia, las víctimas de abuso sexual, el derecho de las personas trans en Puerto Rico) temas que se mantienen, a veces, al margen en Puerto Rico pero que Villegas ha integrado, por más de una década, en sus obras literarias como temas principales. La foto de la portada fue tomada en el Prado (en diciembre de 2019 por Isidoro Kodama y es parte del cuadro conocido como la mujer barbuda (una obra de arte de Jose de Ribera) que contiene lo que podría considerarse una nota al calce en las lápidas a la derecha de la obra que nos da detalles sobre la historia de Magdalena Ventura que posa a la edad de 52 años junto a su marido y el menor de sus tres hijos.
