Jahrhunderts wird die Grundfrage danach, was Kunst ist, wie in der ersten Avantgarde zu Beginn des Jahrhunderts, neu gestellt und neu beantwortet. Im Zentrum dieser Frage steht ein neues Verständnis von Künstler, Werk und Betrachter, sowie deren Verhältnis zueinander. [...] Sucht man nach den Quellen für diese Entgrenzungen in der Kunst, nennen viele der Künstler aus dem Kreis um Fluxus und Happening immer wieder das ästhetische Verständnis und die Denkansätze des amerikanischen Komponisten John Cage (1912-1992) als eine ihrer zentralen Inspirationen. In der Tat lehrt Cage zum Ende der 1950er Jahre an verschiedenen Institutionen in den USA und Deutschland, und vermittelt dort seine Gedanken zu Musik und Komposition. Zu seinen Studenten zählen unter anderem wichtige Vertreter der Happening- und Fluxus-Kunst. Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Bachelorarbeit widmet sich die folgende Ausführung der Frage, ob und auf welche Art der Komponist John Cage Happening und Fluxus durch sein Musikverständnis um 1960 beeinflussen konnte. Dabei wird der Blick immer wieder auf die Wechselwirkung zwischen Musik und bildender Kunst gelenkt. Zunächst wird John Cages eigener wesentlicher künstlerischer Werdegang bis um 1960 verfolgt und auch auf außermusikalische Einflüsse hin untersucht. Daran anschließend wird John Cages musikästhetisches Verständnis zur Zeit seiner einflussreichen Lehrtätigkeiten um 1960 samt Hintergründen aufgefächert und anhand von Werkbeispielen belegt. Das abschließende Kapitel untersucht die Zusammenhänge zwischen der Ästhetik John Cages und Werken dreier wichtigen Vertreter aus der Kunst von Happening und Fluxus. Diese exemplarische Analyse umfasst ein Happening Allan Kaprows, zwei 'Events' George Brechts, sowie Nam June Paiks erste Einzelausstellung Exposition of Mu
