The chief staff executive (CSE) is a paid position which requires one to play a vital role in minimizing the risks and obstacles involved in running an association. When several of the following concerns are taking place and are possibly conflicting with the others, the order of priority is ALWAYS as follow: Legal - it deals with the laws and would require immediate and right to the point action Ethical - it often deals with the ethical guidelines of the association, there could be grey area Relational - one's relationships with the others Procedural - established policies Legal concern would be the most important because it can introduce liability to your association and to yourself. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (commonly called SOX or SarBox) is a United States federal law passed in response to a number of major corporate and accounting scandals. With this act, management can go to jail if improper care was taken along the course of managing and monitoring the organization. Therefore, anything unlawful being done you must stop it directly and instantly. You are the chief hired person so you have the knowledge and power to act decisively without the need to seek input from somebody else. Know the ASAE code of ethics.
