Gr�nden hei nnd ofl�en unterst�tzte und veitheidigte. Und an Gelegenheit zu abweichenden Ansichten konnte es nicht fehlen, so bald man auf dem Wege eigener Forzchung, das gegebne Materiale berucksichtigend nach dem Grunde 80 mancher friiheren Erkl�rung fragte; wobei man wenig stens sehr bald zu der Ueberzeugung gelangen konnte, dafs theils fiir die Sachen, deren diese Commentarien erwahnen, theils und vor Allem fiir die Kritik des d104es noch sehr viel zu thun uhrig war. Beiden Forderungen vollkommen und nach dem Wunsche der Sachverst�ndigen so wie nach dem Standpunkte der Wissenschaftlichkeit unsere Zeitalter: zu gen�gen, f�hlte sich der Herausgeber allerdings anfser Stand gesetzt, und diefs zu bekennen bringt hoffentlich keine Schande. Denn manche Thatsachen und selbst man che konkreten Gegenst�nde sind entweder durch die kurze, abgebrochne Darstellungs1veise Caesars in ein fast undurcl1 dringliches Dunkel gehiillt, oder sie bedurften eines ganz aachkundigen, technisch gebildeten oder mit der Kriegskunst praktisch vertrauten Erkl�ren. Ist Letztrer auch zum Theil unserm Schriftsteller in Guischard zn Theil geworden; so schien es doch, als oh die Einsicht in die Sprache und stren gere Beachtung der Kritik hin und wieder vermifst wurden, so dafs in dieser Hinsicht bei Caesar, wie bei andern Histo rikern derahen, noch manches R�tl1sel zu l�sen seyn diirfte. Dazu kommt, dafs es uberhaupt dem Geiste der Alten und ihrem, Wenn ich so sagen darf, zunachst auf die Ereignisse und deren Resultate gerichteten Sinne fremd ist, in das De tail der Ursachen und Grunde, der �nfsern allerdings auch einwirkenden Umst�nde, in das Technische von Bau und amfern Kunstwerken nit jener angstlichen fast peinlichen Sorgfalt und genetisch construirenden Genauigkeit einzuge hen, bei der es fast nnmoglich wurde, sich ein falsches oder in einzelnen Theilen unrioh�ges Bild des Ganzen zu ent werfen. Wobei nicht zu verschweigen, wie doch weit ver schieden von den Gewohnheiten und Einrichtungen unsrer Zeit der F eld nnd Lagerdienst, Weite und Ordnung des Manches, Stellung und Rangirung der Truppen, R�stung 'und Vertheidigungsmaschinen aller Art waren und wie, bei mangelnder Anschauung so Vieles, was gelehrt oder vielmehr wie man (sehr charakteristisch zu sagen 'pflogt, doco'rt Wird, wir wetten, ganz anders sieh verhielt rind iii der Wirklichkeit bestand, als der jugendlichen Phantasie wohl manchmal vordemm�trirt Wird; zumal, wenn die Er fahrung nachweist, Wie manche Lehrende w�hnen, Zweifel hegen und Unwissenheit oder vielmehr Nicht1wisse'n in ein zelnen F�llen eingestehen, beeintr�chtige die Autorit�t. Unter solchen hemmenden Verhaltnissen ist es Pflicht des Erklarers, defs er moglichst genau und it'1'eng durch Er�r terung und Entwickelung des Wortsinns und des Zusammen hangs der Wahrheit nahe zu kommen strebe; und diese Auf gabe nach Kr�ften zu losen, war des Herausgebers erstes Bestreben: mit welchem Erfolge, bleibe Einsichtsvollern abzuw�gen uberlassen. Wenigstens glaubt der Herausgeber in dieser Beziehung seinem Commentare riieksichtlich des Umfangs und der Ausfuhrlichkeit dieser Realbemerkungen eine wesentliche Eigenschaft gesichert zu haben.
