Gabriel frecuenta la casa de doña Flora, donde se encuentra alojada la condesa Amaranta. �sta le cuenta que está esperanzada porque un apuesto inglés, lord Gray, está cortejando a Inés, y tal vez la rescate de su destino. Inés vive prácticamente enclaustrada en casa de doña María, su futura suegra, empeñada en casarla con Diego de Rumblar, su hijo tarambana y sin mucha sesera. Efectivamente, lord Gray frecuenta la casa, pero no por el motivo que Amaranta cree. Grabriel, celoso, se deja ver también por casa de doña María pero, muy a su pesar, se hace amigo de lord Gray. Asistimos, entre tanto, a las tertulias políticas que tienen lugar en las dos casas, de ambiente liberal en casa de doña Flora y fuertemente conservador en casa de doña María. A quien pretende Lord Gray es a Asunción, la hija mayor de doña María, que va para monja. La pasión amorosa lo posee hasta tal punto que enloquece en el transcurso de la novela. Asunción y él planean huir de la ciudad, y lord Gray la saca una noche de la casa. Enterado de ello, Gabriel cree que es con Inés con quien piensa huir y, en un ataque de celos, se las ingenia para entrar también en casa de doña María. Allí encuentra a Inés deambulando por la casa en busca de Asunción. Aprovechando la coyuntura, la saca de su encierro y la lleva a casa de doña Flora, donde Inés por fin descubre que Amaranta es, en realidad, su madre. Asunción se arrepiente y regresa a casa esa misma noche. Doña María, cuando por la mañana descubre la ausencia de Inés, denuncia a Amaranta a las autoridades. Al día siguiente Inés es devuelta a su reclusión, pero Asunción vuelve a desaparecer: lord Gray ha regresado por la noche para secuestrarla. Fuera de sí, el inglés la maltrata antes de devolverla a su casa, donde su madre la repudia. Gabriel venga a Asunción en un duelo a muerte con lord Gray, al que asiste, sin él saberlo, doña María como testigo. Agradecida y derrotada, le dice que puede quedarse con Inés, que la ha decepcionado y de la que ya no espera conseguir nada, y que se dispone a enterrarse en vida junto con sus hijas. Como ella misma reconoce, pertenece a otro tiempo que ya pasó en 1812 lo aires de libertad están acabando con los viejos principios para bien y para mal. A lo largo de la trama, se suceden las discusiones políticas y asistimos a algunas sesiones de las Cortes, que dan una idea cabal del ambiente y de las contradicciones de la época: cómo la España que nace en las Cortes de Cádiz va sustituyendo poco a poco a la vieja España polvorienta, la España que simboliza doña María. Al término de la novela, Inés y Amaranta se disponen a esconder a Gabriel de la justicia, que lo busca por la muerte de lord Gray.
