James Wait, er en døende vestindisk sort sømand om bord på handelsskibet Narcissus, hvorpå han finder passage fra Bombay til London. Med lider af tuberkulose bliver Wait alvorligt syg næsten fra starten og fremkalder mistanke fra en stor del af besætningen, skønt hans tilsyneladende lidenskab vekker mange humanitære sympati. Skibsføreren, kaptajn Allistoun, og en gammel sejler ved navn Singleton forbliver primært optaget af deres pligter og forekommer ligeglade med Waits tilstand. Rundt Cape of Good Hope kapperes skibet på hendes bjælkeender under en pludselig kuling, og halvdelen af hendes skrog er nedsænket, med mange af besætningens rationer og personlige ejendele mistet; mændene klamrer sig fast på dækket en hel nat og dag og venter i stilhed på, at skibet skal vende resten af vejen og synke. Allistoun nægter at tillade, at masterne bliver skåret, hvilket muliggør, at skroget kan rette sig selv, men ville forhindre skibet i at gøre brug af hendes sejl. Fem af mændene, der er klar over, at der ikke er anført noget om Wait, klatrer ned til hans kabine og redder ham ved deres egen fare. Vent til sidst indrømmer en doven og glat Cockney ved navn Donkin, at han ikke er så syg, som han først hævdede: at han fejrer sygdom for at undgå at skulle deltage i det krævende arbejde, der kræves af enhver sund sømand. Mange andre var allerede blevet mistænkelige over for ham, og kaptajn Allistoun afslører Waits charade foran hele besætningen.
