Dançarinas fabulosas em vestidos cocktail cintilantes e elegantes headbands de penas jogavam as mãos para cima e batiam os pés em um ritmo viciante na pista de dança. Homens elegantemente vestidos, com os cabelos bem separados e penteados para trás, jogavam punhados de dados no feltro verde e macio das mesas de jogos. Alguns circundavam roletas, observando atentamente os flashes giratórios de prata, enquanto outros movimentavam cartas de baralho enquanto bebiam copos de uísque, observando tanto o rio quanto a torre de fichas ao lado deles.
Músicas atrevidas, moda chique e apostas americanas são imagens nostálgicas, tingidas de rosa, que a maioria escolhe projetar quando visualiza os loucos anos vinte, mas o outro lado da moeda trouxe uma realidade pouco convidativa e muito mais dura que a maioria prefere varrer para debaixo do tapete. A primeira bolha imobiliária estava à beira do estouro, e o progresso era evidente, mas dolorosamente lento, o que deu lugar a mais uma era de revoltas violentas, linchamentos e outras formas de opressão impostas às minorias.
Então, é claro, houveram mafiosos. Remova os trajes de seda, metralhadoras polidas e montes obscenos de dinheiro da equação, e fica-se com os corpos flácidos, cheios de balas, caídos sobre volantes ou esparramados como bonecas de pano no chão de estabelecimentos públicos, as paredes pintadas com respingos de sangue e vidros estilhaçados por todos os lados. Esses, dizem eles, são os sortudos, pois seus cadáveres, embora apresentados como uma mensagem pública, forneciam aos entes queridos do falecido algum fechamento. Ao longo das décadas, dezenas de pessoas envolvidas naquele jogo mortal desapareceram completamente, para nunca mais ver a luz do dia.
Um dos mais infames dos gângsteres durante aquela época foi George "Bugs" Moran, que possuía todas as qualidades de um mafioso estereotipado do Século 20. Eles não o chamavam de "Bugs" à toa, já que o homem era uma bomba-relógio vingativa que disparava o inferno sobre qualquer um que ousasse desafiá-lo. Um dos criminosos mais prolíficos de seu tempo, foi condenado e encarcerado pelo menos três vezes antes do aniversário de 21 anos. George foi um pistoleiro experiente (tanto que acabou sendo coroado o "pai dos tiroteios em carros"), um especialista em rum e temível chefe de uma das mais proeminentes gangues de Chicago.
Foram essas atividades e a rivalidade de sua gangue que garantiram que "Bugs" Moran continuasse sendo um nome familiar até hoje. Em 14 de fevereiro de 1929, membros de sua North Side Gang chegaram a um armazém na North Clark Street, em Chicago, apenas para serem abordados por vários policiais. Os oficiais, em seguida, os levaram para o lado de fora e os posicionaram contra uma parede, puxaram metralhadoras e espingardas e atiraram contra eles no local. Uma lenda famosa é que um dos homens baleados, Frank Gusenberg, morrendo de 14 ferimentos de bala, disse à polícia que ninguém havia atirado nele. Embora a afirmação de Gusenberg tenha sido provavelmente apócrifa, ninguém abriu a boca.

De fato, "Scarface" vinha conquistando a imaginação popular do país desde a Lei Seca, conseguindo ser o gângster mais notório da América enquanto vivia uma vida pública e de alto perfil em Chicago.
