Im dritten Band der Asen-Trilogie wird die Geschichte der Asen und Wanen aus der Sicht der Anführerin der Walküren erzählt. Denn jetzt spielen die Menschen in Midgard eine entscheidende Rolle. Die Götter kehren zu den Menschen zurück. Doch zunächst geht es noch recht göttlich zu. Odin zeugt auf der Heide mit Gullweig Hilde die spätere Anführerin der Wolkenreiterinnen. Als der Walvater seine nächtliche Geliebt mit in seine Halle nach Asgard bringt entsteht der große Streit um das Gold der mächtigen Zauberin. Die Asen versuchen das Weib im Kampf zu besiegen. Gullweig gelingt es zu entfliehen. Odin führt die Asen gegen die Wanen um des Goldes Willen in den Krieg. Im Land der Mütter, in dem sie fast zu Tode kommen, werden sie von Jörd, der Mutter Erde, mit den Wanen versöhnt und erhalten von ihr den Auftrag die Welt zu retten.Gullweig indes starb bei der Geburt ihrer Tochter. Hilde wird später von Odin zur Anführerin der Walküren, die als Wolkenreiterin die gefallenen Menschenkrieger nach Walhall geleiten. Eines Tages verweigert Brynhild jedoch Odin den Gehorsam als sie sich in Agnar einen jungen Krieger verliebt. Odin tötet in seiner Wut Gullweigs Tochter mit seinem Speer Gungnir und verstößt somit ein weiteres Mal gegen das Gebot der Nornen. Brynhild wird auf den Hirschberg versetzt der von einer Waberlohe umgeben ist. Nur ein Ritter ohne Fehl und Tadel vermag diese Feuerwand zu durchschreiten und Brynhild zu neuem, zu menschlichem Leben zu erwecken.Siglind und Sigmund das Zwillingspaar des Königs Wölsung und der Walküre Hlökk zeugt in verbotener Liebe Sigurd den jungen strahlenden Helden, der den Nibelungenhort erobert und Völund seinen Ziehvater erschlägt als dieser sich des Hortes bemächtigen will. Verzweifelt zieht Sigurd durch die Welt. Er kommt zum Hirschberg und durchschreitet unbeschadet die Waberlohe. Hier trifft er Brynhild und entbrennt in Liebe zu der Walküre. Nach Jahren verlässt er jedoch seine Geliebte, um in die Menschenwelt hinauszuziehen und ein Königreich zu erobern. So gelangt er nach Worms. Ihm wird Gudrun, König Gunthers buckelige Schwester, zur Braut versprochen sowie das halbe Königreich wenn er dem Burgunder hilft Brynhild zu erobern. Sigurd gibt leichtfertig dieses Versprechen ohne zu ahnen wie sehr er selbst noch mit der Odintochter verbunden ist. Sigurd kommt von der Walküre nicht los was zu seinem Untergang und dem der Burgunder führt.
