Brutus est un tragédie en cinq actes et en vers de Voltaire, représentée pour la première fois à la Comédie-Française, le 11 décembre 1730. Cette pièce a pour sujet la conspiration d'un des fils de Junius Brutus pour le rétablissement des Tarquins, et sa condamnation à mort par son père. L'ouverture de la scène est majestueuse: c'est le sénat romain assemblé et présidé par Brutus, délibérant si l'on recevra le député de Porsenna, qui assiège Rome, où il veut rétablir Tarquin. Dans cette délibération, dans la scène où l'ambassadeur Aruns est introduit au sénat, dans les réponses de Brutus, dans les serments prononcés sur l'autel de Mars enfin dans tout ce premier acte, regardé avec raison comme un chef-d'oeuvre, respire cette énergie d'une république naissante, ce sentiment de la liberté si puissant, si chers si respectable; enfin cet enthousiasme qu'inspire la nécessité de combattre pour défendre ce qu'on vient d'acquérir. Une autre belle scène est celle qui termine le second acte, et où Brutus montre cette joie paternelle et patriotique d'être le vengeur de Rome et d'avoir un fils qui en est l'espérance. L'intrigue languit un peu pendant le troisième et le quatrième acte mais elle se ranime et l'intérêt domine seul dans le cinquième, où l'on retrouve toute la grandeur qui caractérise le premier, avec le pathétique que produisent les combats de la nature et de la patrie dans un homme tel que Brutus.Le rôle de ce héros, où peut-être il n'y a pas quatre vers faibles, ne serait pas indigne d'être comparé aux plus beaux rôles romains de Pierre Corneille. Le style de la pièce, à quelques endroits près, est soutenu dans les autres personnages."Voltaire, raconte Hippolyte Lucas, passa deux ans en Angleterre; il étudia Locke et Newton; il vit jouer Shakespeare, et ses idées, déjà tournées vers l'indépendance en philosophie, en politique et en matière d'art, ne firent que se fortifier et s'agrandir. Il rapporta, de son commerce avec les Anglais, la tragédie de Brutus, qu'il dédia à lord Bolingbroke, dont il était devenu l'ami. Brutus est une pièce toute remplie de sentiments républicains. Voltaire, bien convaincu de l'égalité des hommes, commençait contre l'aristocratie la guerre qu'il poursuivit jusqu'à la fin de ses jours, avec une adresse digne de sa persévérance. Ne le fait-il pas entendre en vingt endroits de sa correspondance? "Il me faut déguiser à Paris ce que je ne pourrais dire trop fortement à Londres!" s'écrie-t-il. La tragédie de Brutus, gâtée par l'amour comme celle d'OEdipe, considérée au point de vue de l'art, n'a pas une grande valeur; cependant elle offre un progrès: Voltaire y présente le spectacle d'un sénat; il fait agir les masses; il remplit la scène; il ne se resserre pas dans le cadre étroit d'un intérieur de palais; il lui faut le mont Tarpéien d'un côté, de l'autre le Capitole, l'autel de Mars, des faisceaux, des licteurs, enfin une pompe inaccoutumée, que Racine avait osé mettre seulement dans les choeurs d'Esther et d'Athalie.
