Il y avait écrit au-dessous, en caractères gothiques: Monsieur Périclès prie le vicomte de Pignerolles de lui faire le plaisir de venir passer la soirée chez lui le vendredi 7 mai. La beauté sous le masque est de rigueur. Et immédiatement, enthousiasmé, le bon Pignerolles se rappela ces fêtes merveilleuses, ces redoutes dont on avait tant parlé vers la fin de l'empire, où mondaines, comédiennes et demi-mondaines se trouvaient réunies, où dans des buen retiros mystérieux, on chantait tout bas à l'oreille des versets du Cantique des Cantiques, où le mot d'ordre courant de bouche en bouche était: Volupté!... Après avoir bien cherché dans sa tête de bon gentilhomme vendéen, comme l'invitation demandait une réponse, Pignerolles prit une carte et écrivit: - Oui, Lucullus! Oui, Sardanapale! Oui, intendant Fouquet! Puis il songea à son costume et consulta son ami Brionne. - Si tu m'en crois, lui dit ce dernier, tu te dispenseras du manteau vénitien. Il est très difficile à porter; au moindre geste, il tourne sur l'épaule et, ainsi affublé, il faut très peu de chose à un honnête châtelain pour avoir l'air ridicule. Revêts plutôt l'habit rouge avec le gilet blanc, la culotte noire, les bas de soie noirs; sous le bras, le bicorne à ganse noire; ainsi vêtu, bâti comme tu l'es, tu peux espérer un de ces succès qui marquent dans la vie d'un joyeux viveur.
About the Author: Richard de L'Isle de Falcon de Saint-Geniès, dit Richard O'Monroy, né en 1849 à Paris où il est mort en 1916, est un romancier et nouvelliste français. Sorti de l'école de Saint-Cyr en 1870, il est capitaine de cavalerie lorsqu'il est acculé à la démission en 1891, ce qui lui permet de se consacrer pleinement à l'écriture. Il contribue à La Vie parisienne et au Gil Blas des saynètes de la vie d'officier, des croquis parisiens, des romans et des nouvelles réunis par la suite en une cinquantaine de volumes. Il est également l'auteur de quelques vaudevilles et comédies en un acte. Son style d'allure vive et sa gaieté sentimentale ont su plaire pendant un temps à un certain public
