About the Book

You love horses and you love therapy ... is it possible to combine those two loves in a fulfilling career? Yes, it is!

The information in this book is geared towards high school and college students, as well as practicing therapists, who are considering a career involving hippotherapy. Learn from those who are on the path working towards this career and from the author who has worked for over 20 years incorporating hippotherapy into her occupational therapy treatments.

The book is organized into three sections ...

  • Section One has four chapters ranging from a junior high school student's questions about a therapy career that incorporates horses and people, to two college students pursuing a therapy degree and then to a licensed therapist pursuing the addition of hippotherapy to her therapy practice.
  • Section Two contains 3 chapters all about horses, how do you choose and train a therapy horse, how do you fit saddles, and how do you prevent therapy horse burnout.
  • Section Three consists of 3 chapters with the therapist in mind - how to provide a therapy internship, demystifying how hippotherapy is integrated into treatment planning and finally a "reality check" describing why therapist's offer hippotherapy even though it costs more to provide and is physically demanding.

You won't want to miss the valuable and insightful information provided in each chapter!

Rebecca Cook is an Occupational Therapist and Equine Professional with over 30 years of experience in the arena. She has authored 12 Steps to Integrity With Your Horse, Saddle Fit Simplified, and is also the author of The Brown Pony Series.

Tally Up: A Companion Book to the Brown Pony Series - Checklists created from a task analysis of showmanship and riding skills that can be used to improve understanding of a Judge's class placings and to provide a foundation of skills to practice for competition. Also, a great breakdown of skills for an instructor to use in lesson planning.

Safe Horse Handling: A Companion Book to the Brown Pony Series - Increase awareness of common sense safety to implement when working around horses. Some of the tips may be inadvertently overlooked until there is an accident. Great for equine instructors, therapeutic riding volunteer training, and equine assisted activity and therapy programs.

Incorporating Games in Hippotherapy: A Companion Book to the Brown Pony Series - Play is the "work" of the child (and the de-stressor of the adult). Play engages the whole person: imagination, emotion, cognition, and engagement, along with the physical skills components of the game activities. Games can build in a reason for completing various ring figures, speed changes, stops and starts. Learn ideas for layering on goal-oriented game activities in a hippotherapy session.

About the Author: Rebecca Cook always loved horses and had her first ride at age 2. At the University of Toledo she took horseback riding for her required physical education credits. Rebecca graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 1988 and added hippotherapy to her Occupational Therapy career in 1993. She started with one client and over the following years had more requests from parents wanting this specialized and fun therapy treatment for their children. In 1997 she formed a small business and entered into a full-time private Occupational Therapy practice specializing in hippotherapy. Rebecca has over 25 years of experience working with fieldwork internship students.
