Three strangers meet on the Internet and without even a single phone call among them before departing, the trio decides to embark on a ten thousand mile adventure to Alaska together. Over the course of the journey, they encounter extreme weather, exploding rabbits, a life-changing motorcycle accident, secret fanatical obsessions, the results of very bad decisions, impossible to describe scenery and unbelievable memories. The journey originates from the storyteller's point of view, who decides that time has finally come to do whatever is required in order to ride his motorcycle to the Last Frontier. Inflicted with a debilitating illness that has temporarily stabilized, and with the promise made to his dying mother echoing daily in his mind, he puts into motion what would become the ride of his life.
After finding that none of his friends have any interest in doing this exhausting, expensive, and seemingly crazy ride, he is forced to turn to the Internet and find strangers that may have interest in joining along. For eight months he plans the adventure, and provides guidance to a rider who would eventually go along the journey but who lacks any decision making capabilities. A third person would join the two to venture north before they cross the border into Canada. The three would quickly learn that they have almost nothing in common with one another, come from completely different backgrounds, and other than this particular trip, would never have even had the remotest chance at meeting each one another otherwise. They struggle to find similarities with one another but each finally decides to focus on their own journey as they ride towards Alaska.
Over and over, fate steps into the adventure in the most random of ways to bring both pleasures and pains to the group riding north. During the preparations for the journey to the 49th state, the storyteller has numerous interactions with one specific person that provides guidance and answers over a period of months. What are the odds that the two of them would cross paths, in person and totally by random chance, in the largest state of the union? Or the other chance meeting with a person that originally planned to join the trio but had to back out at the last moment; only to be encountered at the international border in a window of time only seconds long?
As time continues on, one relationship in the group strengthens while another sours and becomes problematic and leads to nearly deadly consequences. One of the trio's manic and obsessive behaviors becomes a growing and escalating issue and true personalities come to light thousands of miles away from home. Through it all, the ride continues as they each struggle with the exhaustion of riding repeat twelve hour days without a break and a limited amount of time to reach the land of the midnight sun.
Barely reaching their main goal, one of the three is forced to turn around and head home. The other two continue on together, only to have issues continually arise between and around them until a day arrives in which too many bad decisions come to an apex and create a nearly deadly accident for one of them. Compounding the issues is an incomplete diagnosis of the medical problems that occurred, which gives false hope to the injured rider who struggles to continue his once in a lifetime trip even as his body tries to force him to end the trip immediately.
This story is not only about a strenuous motorcycle ride to Alaska, but also about the perseverance of those that would overcome different issues and defeat the negative components that the trip would place onto them. However, nobody could have expected what was encountered at the final moments of the last pair's riding relationship and the truly shocking way that the pair would end up separating for good.
It started as a trip and became an epic, once in a lifetime adventure.
