La storia delle Brigate Rosse "storiche" si snoda per quasi due decenni, dal 1970 al 1988: si tratta di anni convulsi, durante i quali l'Italia bollente delle contestazioni e dell'autunno caldo si trasforma nell'Italia disimpegnata del riflusso e dello yuppismo.
Non si è trattato di un passaggio graduale: all'opposto, il cambiamento è stato attraversato da insidie drammatiche, tra trame eversive di destra e velleità pseudorivoluzionarie di sinistra. Sono gli Anni di piombo e di tritolo, che la nostra memoria collettiva ha troppo presto dimenticato.
Di quella stagione le Brigate Rosse sono state una delle espressioni più significative: fondate su un retroterra ideologico coerente pur nel suo schematismo, organizzate militarmente in modo verticistico, articolate sul territorio, hanno rappresentato il partito armato della rivoluzione, capace di raccogliere consensi (almeno nei primi anni) nel mondo variegato della sinistra extraparlamentare.
Proprio alle Brigate Rosse è dedicato questo lavoro, una ricerca per capire meglio i nostri anni Settanta-Ottanta. Non si vuole "interpretare" il fenomeno terroristico né svelare improbabili verità occulte: più semplicemente si preferisce "raccontare" la vicenda delle Brigate Rosse e del migliaio di suoi militanti/simpatizzanti.
Si parte con un'introduzione storica che ne inquadra la nascita e l'evoluzione, dalle prime elaborazioni del Collettivo Politico Metropolitano di Milano, alle azioni dimostrative del 1973-76, alle uccisioni di giornalisti e magistrati, sino al rapimento Moro della primavera 1978; quindi la progressiva deriva, il fenomeno del pentitismo, il frazionamento in sottogruppi, l'isolamento politico e sociale, la sconfitta con gli ultimi arresti e la fine dell'esperienza decretata dagli stessi capi storici. Un ultimo paragrafo è dedicato alle "Nuove Brigate Rosse" degli anni Duemila, protagoniste degli omicidi D'Antona e Biagi.
All'inquadramento storico segue una raccolta di documenti utili per comprendere l'impostazione politico-ideologica del gruppo: si tratta delle prime elaborazioni e di disposizioni in materia organizzativa.
La terza parte è dedicata ai profili biografici dei principali dirigenti e uomini d'azione, dai fondatori Renato Curcio, Mara Cagol e Alberto Franceschini, ai protagonisti del rapimento Moro Mario Moretti, Adriana Faranda, Barbara Balzerani, Valerio Morucci.
L'ultima parte è dedicata alle vittime: la lunga serie inizia nel 1974 con i due militanti neofascisti Giralucci e Mazzola, uccisi nella sede del Msi di Padova, e si conclude con il senatore democristiano Ruffilli, ucciso a Forlì nel 1988.
