Das bedeutet: Flaubert hat jetzt Werke zu be haupten; Werke, deren er nicht immer sicher war, die er manchmal verleugnet hat. "ich hasse die b�rger liche Poesie, die Familienkunst, obwohl ich selbst welche schreibe. Um so weniger durften andere daran r�hren. Das Werk konnte seinem Meister Zweifel und Qual machen, so blieb es doch das Werk seines Schicksals. Mochte er es unvollkommen aus dem Marmor geschlagen haben, so hatte es" doch, schon vor ihm, darin gesteckt. Die g�ttliche Folge richtigkeit des Schaffens machte in diesem, wie injedem wahren Kunstlerbewn�tsein, die Kritik zu einem Popanz. Da das Werk nun geschehen ist und dasteht: was soll Reden? Redet man gegen das Weltall und seinen Sch�pfer? Schreibt Artikel gegen eine Pflanze? Worte �ber den Sternenhimmel hin und ein wenig gesmochene Luft auf einen Halm oder einen Wald gehaucht: das ist Kritik. Vielleicht konnte sie einmal von innen kommen und das stumme Werk redend machen; konnte ein Kritiker alles schon gewesen sein, was der Dichter selbst einst war: Nil schiffer, griechischer Rhetor, Pirat und Monch, Seilt�nzer und byzantinischer Kaiser, und konnte auch das hier entstandene schon erlebt haben. Aber es war unwahrscheinlich, da� diese ideale Kritik einem andern zu Gebote stand, als dem Autor. Und es blieb schwer begreiflich, wie jemand sich einbilden konnte, er habe Macht �ber das Werk eines andern. War's ein Eigener, der Kritik trieb, wie sainte-beuve, dann staunte Flaubert, da� er nicht lieber B�cher schrieb. Wo es ging, sah er in Kritiken Ha�; und wo es nicht m�glich war, staunte er. Unergr�ndlich mu� er die verachtet haben, die Herz von ihm forderten. Sie fehlten ihm nicht und fehlen keinem. Sie grassieren in den gro�en Rev�en, �berall dort, wo die Literatur zum Gebrauch der Familien hergerichtet wird und das Schreiben nichts, aber alles das Gem�t gilt.

Die Keuschheit und das gottliche Gemisch aus Ver achtung und Verstehen in einem Meister, der ver h�llten Hauptes hinter seiner Welt bleibt, dulden diese Herzlichen nicht. Sie fordern, da� er hervor trete, jedes Ding mit dem erkl�renden St�ckchen betupfe und auf jedes eine ger�hrte Tr�ne fallen lasse. Er soll ihnen sein Herz auf offener Hand ent gegenflagen. Verschm�ht er's, geraten die Herz Iichen' vor Bosheit au�er sich. Seine gro�e Kunst erbitten sie nur noch mehr. Ein malender, t�nender Stil, weise Kadenzen, Vergleiche aus unb�rgerlichen Gebieten machen ihn kalter Virtuosit�t h�chst ver d�chtig. Sie fassen es nicht, da� man, um gelitten zu haben, nicht ihre h��lichen S�tze schreiben mu�. Sie sind nicht streng genug, sich in ein k�nstliches Getriebe zu versenken, das grausam ist wie das der Natur. Sie sind nicht tief genug, zu wissen, da� Sch�nheit niemals kalt war; da� hinter jeder Sch�n heit der Schmerz steht, den Mei�el noch in der Hand. Sie sind die Herzlichen und waren noch immer auf dem Posten, wenn es hie�, eine Bovary kreuzigen.
