About the Book

Nigeria, a nation in western Africa, is formally known as the Federal Republic of Nigeria. 356,669 square miles (923,768 sq km). Estimated population in 2022: 217,376,000 Capital city: Abuja. There are around 250 different ethnic groups, some of which are the Hausa, Fulani, Yoruba, and Igbo. Official languages are Hausa and English. Religions: Islam; traditional beliefs; Christianity (Protestant and other Christians; Roman Catholic). Money: naira.

Nigeria is made up of lowlands between plateaus that serve as significant river basins, particularly those that receive water from the Niger River. Manufacturing is becoming more significant in its emerging diversified economy, which is mostly dependent on petroleum output and agriculture. More over half of the workforce is employed in the sectors of services, commerce, and transportation. Nigeria is a federal republic with two legislative chambers; the president serves as the head of state and government.

The area has been inhabited for thousands of years and served as the capital of various pre-colonial empires, including Kanem-Bornu, Benin, and Oyo, as well as the Nok civilisation from 500 BCE to 200 CE. There were states among the Hausa and Fulani. It was visited by Europeans in the 15th century and developed as a hub for the slave trade. In 1861, the region started to fall under British rule, and in 1914, it became a British colony. In 1960, Nigeria declared its independence, and in 1963 it established a republic. Military regimes dominated the nation from 1966 to 1979 and from 1983 to 1999 as a result of ethnic unrest that quickly turned into military coups. After an estimated million Biafrans perished from malnutrition during the civil war that raged between the federal government and the former Eastern part of Nigeria from 1967 to 1970, Biafra finally submitted. The capital was relocated from Lagos to Abuja in 1991. International sanctions were imposed when the government executed Ken Saro-Wiwa in 1995, and civilian authority was ultimately restored in 1999 after a president was elected. Early in the twenty-first century, ethnic conflict, which had previously been contained by periods of military administration, flared up along with demonstrations against Niger delta oil exploitation. Following the adoption of the Shariah by certain northern and central states, tensions between Muslims and Christians also grew.
In this book, you will know many great things in brief about Nigeria. From the inception to the recent. Let's go on this journey together.
