En ésta breve historia de los materiales de construcción utilizados en la Arquitectura, se narra el proceso que llevó a la producción industrial de los materiales tradicionales de construcción (madera, piedra, cerámica, hierro, vidrio, concreto y los plásticos) a partir de la Revolución Industrial surgida en Inglaterra a mediados del siglo XVIII y cómo estos materiales a través de distintos procesos industriales se convirtieron en los primeros productos arquitectónicos fabricados en serie. Esto nos permitirá entender el complejo proceso de desarrollo de un nuevo material de construcción y como transformarlo para convertirlo en un producto arquitectónico fabricado en serie. La Revolución Industrial iniciada en Gran Bretaña a partir de 1760, es el inicio del cambio en los procesos constructivos ya que provocó grandes transformaciones y avances en los materiales de construcción. En este período se redescubrió la fórmula del cemento y del concreto olvidada desde la época del Imperio Romano y se sentaron las bases para el desarrollo de la industria del hierro y del acero que permitirían construir el primer puente metálico prefabricado en Coalbrookdale en 1779 y los primeros edificios construídos con estructura metálica de vigas, columnas y barras de refuerzo de hierro fundido para fábricas de hilados en 1797, ambas construcciones realizadas en Inglaterra.A la abundante producción de hierro en Gran Bretaña, le acompañó un boom de invenciones que permitieron construir toda clase de maquinaria con este material accionada primero con energía hidráulica y después con vapor, para procesar y producir materiales de construcción en tamaños y medidas estandarizados para una creciente población que empezó a emigrar del campo a las ciudades en donde se establecían las nacientes fábricas e industrias y que requerían viviendas y toda clase de obras de infraestructura. Se inventaron máquinas y molinos para aserraderos en donde se procesaba la madera; taladros y sierras para cortar la piedra y aparatos y hornos para fabricar tabiques en serie con moldes metálicos.La Revolución Industrial inició la "era de la mecanización" para los procesos de producción de los materiales de construcción de la época: madera, piedra, cerámica, hierro y acero, vidrio, cemento y concreto y también fue el antecedente para los que se desarrollarían posteriormente como el aluminio y los plásticos en el siglo XX. Esta mecanización trajo consigo la fabricación y comercialización de materiales de construcción con medidas estándar que continúa vigente hasta nuestros días. Existe poca bibliografía específica en español relacionada a este tema, por lo que los estudiantes y profesionales de la Arquitectura, encontrarán información que podría serles útil en éstas líneas. Reflejan la visión de la Arquitectura desde el punto de vista de un Diseñador Industrial que cursó la Maestría en Arquitectura y que por azares del destino y decisión propia, se dedica a la construcción desde hace más de 20 años en México.
