English summary: The present text traces the history of sustainable development as a political movement from its beginnings in the late 1940s to Rio 2012. In addition, the author examines French business practices and the development of sustainable development policies over the course of the twentieth century. Il ne s'agit pas non plus d'une reconstitution historique d'un univers que certains verraient comme romanesque (les gentils ecolos sauvant la planete a la force de leurs escalades sur les centrales nucleaires, ou le citoyen modele faisant le tri de ses dechets alors qu'il n'y a qu'une seule poubelle dans la rue, ...). Cet ouvrage a la particularite de repositionner chronologiquement l'enchainement des reunions et decisions internationales en matiere de Developpement Durable depuis plus de 40 ans. Depuis le 1er sommet de la Terre en 1972, et meme avant avec la creation de l'Union Internationale pour la Protection de la Nature (en 1948) puis de l'Union Internationale pour la Conservation de la Nature - pour le pilier environnement et economique; Depuis 1953 pour le pilier social avec les travaux d'industriels fortement influences par le protestantisme. Ce livre presente egalement une chronologie dans la mise en oeuvre au quotidien par les entreprises francaises, et les choix qui ont ete alors realises - avec le plus possible d'exemples concrets. Le lecteur trouvera en annexe une grande partie des textes de reference. Le contenu de ce livre se veut accessible au plus grand nombre, et nullement reserve a des specialistes de certains domaines. Il cherche a repondre aux questions: Qu'est-ce que le DD?; Quels en sont les codes?; Quel est le vocabulaire du DD?; Pourquoi faut-il soutenir le DD? . Volontairement, cet ouvrage s'arrete apres Rio 2012 - conference qui marque une sorte de desinteret dans la reconnaissance du Developpement Durable par les Etats. Cette vue d'ensemble permet a chacun d'apprecier le chemin qu'il reste a parcourir, et de se forger une opinion sur le paradoxe existentiel qui existe entre Developpement Durable et croissance economique. Ingenieur de formation, diplome de l'Institut national des telecommunications (et de HEC CESA, Jean-Philippe Carise enseigne actuellement a l'ENSTA, Supelec et Paris 7. Apres avoir dirige et preside des entreprises filiales de grands groupes (Generale des eaux, Publicis...) et mis en place des politiques Qualite (ISO 9001) et Environnementale (ISO 14001), il s'est specialise dans la specification et la mise en oeuvre des strategies d'entreprises liees au developpement durable. Il conseille depuis plusieurs annees les entreprises sur les mises en oeuvre de politiques environnementales et plus particulierement sur les aspects: eau, biodiversite et innovation societale.
