Uma breve e simples biografia de sua vida. O jovem Tomás não aspirava a ser rico, pois já o era. Ele vem de uma linhagem nobre, tanto por parte da mãe quanto do pai. Renunciou a esses luxos e vaidades para se tornar um frade mendicante. Tomás nunca teve a aspiração de ser considerado um sábio. Ele o conseguiu graças ao seu talento natural e a um amor disciplinado pelo estudo e pela verdade. Sua única aspiração: ser um santo. E ele conseguiu.

Por isso, sempre achei ridículos esses comportamentos politicamente corretos, observados em alguns livros acadêmicos enfadonhos, que consistem em tratá-lo apenas como Tomás de Aquino, e não como São Tomás de Aquino. Como se falar da filosofia e chamá-lo de santo significasse ceder à "superstição". Tomás era, acima de tudo, um santo. Isso é tudo o que ele queria ser na vida. Quem não compreende isso, nunca compreenderá a vida do Irmão Tomás e sua filosofia.

Outro lugar-comum frequentemente utilizado é qualificá-lo exclusivamente como teólogo, já que a filosofia foi feita pelo Estagirita... Tomás não fez nada além de repetir a doutrina de Aristóteles. Deixando de lado a falsidade dessa proposição, é apropriado perguntar por que é necessário ser ateu para filosofar. Por que uma conclusão é verdadeira se alcançada por um ateu e estranhamente falsa se alcançada por um crente?

São Tomás filosofou porque acreditava que a verdadeira teologia exige uma sólida base filosófica. É por isso que ele foi primeiro um filósofo e depois um teólogo. Quando estava preso na torre do castelo de Roccasecca, suas leituras eram a Bíblia e Aristóteles. Aqueles que consideram os crentes como "fanáticos" são os mesmos que os chamam de teólogos quando eles filosofam. Pergunto então: quem são os fanáticos?

Ainda preciso aprofundar alguns aspectos dessa vida, por exemplo: o que significava para São Tomás abraçar o ideal da pobreza e da obediência, mesmo que tivesse que se afastar de seus livros e de sua Universidade; qual era o significado do religioso mendicante em sua eclesiologia; como ele relacionava suas experiências místicas com seus estudos; o que aconteceu com sua alma em 6 de dezembro de 1273, quando abandonou repentinamente e definitivamente sua tarefa de escritor; como explicar sua morte misteriosa?
