EXTRAIT, Un matin, M. Charles Brancas, avocat à Paris (rue de Tournon, 43, au premier, la porte à gauche), reçut d'un ami de province la lettre suivante: Vieilleville, 6 mai 1845. Mon cher ami, Si tu ne me prêtes pas ton éloquence pour huit jours, je suis ruiné. Voici l'affaire: Jean-Pierre-Hippolyte Ripainsel (en 1793 Caïus-Gracchus Ripainsel), mon oncle, ancien garçon meunier, vient de mourir laissant deux millions. Je passe sur la douleur que ce funeste événement a causée à ses nombreux amis. Entre nous, le défunt était un ladre vert qui n'a jamais donné un centime à qui que ce soit, mais qui obligeait volontiers le premier venu à vingt, trente ou quarante pour cent. Il s'est acquis par là, dans le pays, la plus grande considération. L'histoire dit que le vieux reître, qui fut, je ne sais comment, d'abord commis aux vivres, puis fournisseur général, a fait jeûner plus d'une fois les soldats de la République et de l'Empire, qu'il les a vêtus de draps à demi-brûlés, chaussés de souliers de carton, et abreuvés de piquettes horribles où les eaux poétiques du Rhin, du Tage et du Garigliano entraient pour une bonne moitié; mais ce sont des commérages qui ne méritent pas qu'on les relève. Tout cancre qu'il était, Caïus-Gracchus Ripainsel (alias Jean-Pierre-Hippolyte) a trouvé bon de restituer, après décès, bien entendu, car le brave homme de son vivant, n'aurait pas lâché la plus petite obole.
About the Author: Alfred Assollant, parfois écrit Assolant, né à Aubusson (Creuse) le 20 mars 1827 et mort à Paris le 3 mars 1886, est un romancier français, auteur de romans pour la jeunesse. Licencié ès Lettres, il commença par enseigner l'histoire à Paris et dans quelques autres villes mais, s'étant attiré les foudres de son recteur pour ses opinions républicaines, il chercha à s'assurer une existence plus libre en Amérique du Nord et entreprit un voyage aux États-Unis. Déçu, il revint à Paris où, en 1858, il publia sous le titre de Scènes de la vie des États-Unis plusieurs nouvelles qui suscitèrent de l'intérêt par leur vie et leur couleur locale. Par la suite se succédèrent rapidement des romans et des nouvelles où apparaissaient une certaine indifférence vis-à-vis de l'ordre et de la mesure et un goût pour le paradoxe et les traits d'esprit. Farouche opposant de Napoléon III, il collabora à la presse d'opposition, puis devint auteur de romans pour la jeunesse. En 1867, il publia Les Aventures du capitaine Corcoran dans la Bibliothèque rose de Louis Hachette. Après la guerre de 1870 il fut surtout un écrivain politique, surtout dans les organes proches des partisans de la Commune. Il ne manqua pas non plus à chaque occasion de manifester sa haine des Allemands comme dans Le docteur Judassohn. Il a écrit sous le nom d' Alceste . Après plusieurs échecs successifs à la députation, il termine sa vie dans l'anonymat et meurt à Paris en 1886. Il est inhumé au cimetière du Père-Lachaise (53e division).
