About the Book

My father, George Higgs, lived to be 109 years old, and that life was amazingly well-lived. He lived through two world wars, the Great Depression, and more. He started writing - both prose and poetry - after he retired, and everyone who read his writings said he had a real way with words. He wrote an autobiography when he was 102, and another, not quite finished, after that. He used computers and an iPad when he was well past 100 years old. It was only his failing eyesight that stopped him. I believe his writings deserve a wider audience. He has interesting things to say about the many events during his life, and, to add to the reader's experience, I have added images and other annotations to help explain the context of the day. I hope it provides an interesting historical commentary of the past 100 years or so.
About the Author: George Samuel Higgs was born on the 1st of January, 1907, at an Army Camp in Hampshire. England, (Bordon Camp). He attended Army schools until the outbreak of the Great War, 1914-1918. He left school at age 14 to help his family make ends meet. Basically self-educated, with the help of technical night schools of that day, and largely by his own efforts and ambition, he progressed into top management of mechanical engineering. The story starts long before that and by using his imagination he added to the stories told by his mother after the premature death of his father in 1910. He lived through World War 1, the Great Depression, World War 2, including the Coventry Blitz, and moved to Leicestershire during World War 2 to help set up and run a 'shadow factory'. After the war, he stayed in Leicestershire for the rest of this life. He died on February 26, 2016, at the age of 109.
