About the Book

Born to Storms: Set in the 2020s, a young Afro-American woman, Sarah, supported by an Artificial Intelligence, JanetA, driven from her home by storms and rising seas, embarks on a life-affirming struggle to find and support many people in action on Our Climate Crisis. The young people of the world alive today will have to address many problems caused by Our Climate Crisis. These include sea level rise, great storms, and disruption of food production. They need all the new tools they can get for this historic task. Our young people must face the difficult choices needed to address these problems and not just hide from them in escapist literature.Born to Storms is a Hero's Journey. The classic example of this story type is the Iliad. In more recent times, this story type was made the basis of such franchises as "Star Wars" and "Star Trek".In the Hero's Journey, we meet a young person who is living his or her own normal life as best they can. Forces far beyond our hero's control then force the person into action. He or she then gathers a team and seeks out big problems that occur to the team as great adventures. Sometimes they win, sometimes they lose, but they have all committed their lives to a great fight. This is the classic story that our young people need and want today. This is the story that is presented in Born to Storms. Artificial Intelligence [AI] is a new tool that society needs to address the great problems of the 21st century. AIs and Deep Learning are two of the most attractive new tools that are now available for this effort but will require both adaption and application.Symbioses are associations of living organisms that mutually support each other. Human beings are already dependent on many natural symbioses. We are symbiotic with our food plants and animals. Our food plants are symbiotic with the ecology of organisms that make soil rich. Can we now build a true human/AI symbiosis? Would such a symbiosis be of value to human society? Would it help us address Our Climate Crisis? Within these questions lies a great story. Many of the novels on Our Climate Crisis currently available to young people are dystopias. Even though well written, they depict a failed and degenerate society after an ecological collapse. These works do not provide an action plan to address great problems. Quite the opposite, they only provide an image of loss and devastation. This is not a useful story path to present to society's young people. Born to Storms is not just another one of these novels. It takes a quite different tack. This story looks at actions that are attractive to young people. This story may be read as a love story for Earth. Earth has been our home for about two hundred thousand years and will remain our planet of origin as long as humans and the Earth last. In the face of Our Climate Crisis, many of our young people are open to showing renewed love for our Earth. Born to Storms is a Young Adult novel in that it does not contain foul language, sex, or violence. It is intended for use in education. This novel is a Hard Science Fiction novel in that it is set in the near future and presents possibilities actually available in our real world. Specifically it looks at an innovative use of AIs to address the problems we will face in this century. Please join Sarah and JanetA in their efforts to face the reality of the 21st century. You can start your quest today.
