About the Book

In 1978, police raided the MOVE headquarters in Philadelphia. During the raid the police shot and killed one of their own, but nine MOVE members, including Mike's father and his mother (pregnant with him at the time), were convicted for the death. In a prison cell, Debbie Africa gave birth and was able to spend just three days with her son before guards discovered Mike and wrenched them apart. In 1985, Mike was seven when he saw the smoke from the police bombing of the new MOVE headquarters fill the sky. Mike dedicated his life to freeing his parents and the rest of the MOVE nine. It took forty years, but they are free!

Born on a Move, the first memoir by a member of the MOVE organization, is Mike's coming-of-age story--a decades-long effort to come to terms with his traumatic separation, win justice for his family, and come into his own as a radical activist, hip-hop artist, and motivational speaker. Replete with intimate portraits of inspiring activists, including his mentors Ramona Africa and Mumia Abu-Jamal, Born on a Move depicts a life in the struggle from the perspective of one born into the heart of it.

About the Author: Mike Africa, Jr. was born in prison in September 1978. He is a lifelong freedom fighter on behalf of the MOVE 9 and other political prisoners. He is a member of MOVE and director of the Seed of Wisdom Foundation.

Mumia Abu-Jamal is an award-winning journalist and former Black Panther Party member whose books include We Want Freedom: A Life in the Black Panther Party, Live From Death Row, Death Blossoms: Reflections from a Prisoner of Conscience, All Things Censored, and Faith of our Fathers: An Examination of the Spiritual Life of African and African-American People. America's best-known political prisoner, he has been living in Pennsylvania prisons since 1982, the majority of those on death row.

Debbie Africa and Mike Africa are formerly incarcerated political prisoners. Two members of the MOVE 9, they were sentenced to thirty to one hundred years for the death of a policeman during a 1978 siege of a MOVE house in Philadelphia's Powelton Village.
