About the Book

Die katholische Stadtkirche in Frauenfeld ist ein fruhes Werk des ortsansassigen Architekten Albert Rimli (1871-1954). Der 1904 bis 1906 entstandene Sakralbau in neubarockem Stil setzt einen entscheidenden Akzent in der Silhouette der Thurgauer Hauptstadt. In zeitgenossischen Zeitungsartikeln ist nachzulesen, dass der Neubau schweizweit Beachtung fand. Immerhin hatte sich der junge und unerfahrene Albert Rimli mit seinem Entwurf gegen den Doyen des schweizerischen Kirchenbaus, August Hardegger (1858-1927), durchgesetzt. Ausgehend von lokalen Quellen und zeitgenossischen Publikationen nimmt die Autorin das Lesepublikum mit auf eine spannende Zeitreise und zeigt auf, wie katholische Theologen als Bauinitianten und kunsthistorische Gutachter entscheidend Einfluss auf die Gestaltung von Kirchenbauten nahmen. Um das katholische Selbstbewusstsein, das in St. Nikolaus Gestalt findet, zu erklaren, bietet die Autorin einen historischen Ruckblick auf die Ereignisse des Kulturkampfs und die besondere gesellschaftliche Situation der Thurgauer Katholiken im 19. Jahrhundert. Die spiritualitatsgeschichtliche Dimension dieses Kirchenbauvorhabens konzentriert sich im Motto der Predigt, die der Stadtpfarrer Alois Lotscher unmittelbar nach seinem Amtsantritt 1902 hielt: 'Helft mir eine Kirche bauen, die da werden soll ein Bollwerk des Glaubens, ein Leuchtturm unsterblicher Hoffnungen in allen Trubsalen des Lebens, ein Centrum der Liebe und der Erbarmungen Gottes fur Euch und Eure Kinder!' Im zweiten Teil des Bandes erfahrt man im Kapitel 'Blick in die Kunstdenkmalerforschung' Wissenswertes aus der bisherigen Archivrecherche. In gewohnter Weise berichten die Denkmalpfleger und Denkmalpflegerinnen uber abgeschlossene Restaurierungen und uber Denkwurdiges aus ihrem oft wechselvollen Alltag.
About the Author: Beatrice Sendner, Architekturhistorikerin und Denkmalpflegerin, promovierte uber Eisenbahnbauten des 19. Jahrhunderts. Seit 1988 in der praktischen Denkmalpflege tatig, war sie 1997-2008 Mitglied der Eidgenossischen Kommission fur Denkmalpflege EKD. Das Amt fur Denkmalpflege des Kantons Thurgau steht seit 1999 unter ihrer Leitung. Mit der 2000 begrundeten Reihe Denkmal- pflege im Thurgau soll Wissen uber die lokale Baukultur erarbeitet und zuganglich gemacht werden.
