Si la Historia, menos desmemoriada que el Tiempo, no se cuidase de retener y fijar toda humana ocurrencia, ya sea de las públicas y resonantes, ya de las domésticas y silenciosas, hoy no sabría nadie que los Carrascos, en su tercer cambio de domicilio, fueron a parar a un holgado principal de la Cava Baja de San Francisco, donde disfrutaban del discorde bullicio de las galeras y carromatos, y del grande acopio de vituallas, huevos, caza, reses menores, garbanzos, chorizos, etc., que aquellos descargaban en los paradores. Escogió D. Bruno este barrio mirando a la baratura de las viviendas; fijose en él por exigencia de su peculio (que con las dispendiosas vanidades de la vida en Madrid iba enflaqueciendo), y por dar gusto a su esposa, la señora Doña Leandra, cuyo espíritu con invencible querencia tiraba hacia el Sur de Madrid, que entonces era, y hoy quizás lo es todavía, lo más septentrional de La Mancha. En mal hora trasplantada del cortijo a la corte, aliviaba la infeliz mujer su inmenso fastidio poniéndose en contacto con arrieros y trajinantes, con zagalones y mozos de mulas, respirando entre ellos el aire de campo que pegado al paño burdo de sus ropas traían.Pronto se asimiló Doña Leandra el vivir de aquellos barrios: la que en el centro de Madrid no supo nunca dar un paso sin perderse, ni pudo aprender la entrada y salida de calles, plazuelas y costanillas, en la Cava y sus adyacentes dominó sin brújula la topografía, y navegaba con fácil rumbo en el confuso espacio comprendido entre Cuchilleros y la Fuentecilla, entre la Nunciatura y San Millán. Era su más grato esparcimiento salir muy temprano a la compra, con la muchacha o sin ella, y de paso hacer la visita de mesones, viendo y examinando la carga y personas que venían de los pueblos. En estas idas y venidas de mosca prisionera que busca la luz y el aire, Doña Leandra corría con preferencia cariñosa tras de los ordinarios manchegos, que traían a Madrid, con el vino y la cebada, el calor y las alegrías de la tierra. Casi con lágrimas en los ojos entraba la señora en el mesón de la Acemilería, calle de Toledo, donde paraban los mozos de Consuegra, Daimiel, Herencia, Horcajo y Calatrava, o en el del Dragón (Cava Baja), donde rendían viaje los de Almagro, Valdepeñas, Argamasilla y Corral de Almaguer. Amistades y conocimientos encontró en aquellos y otros paradores, y su mayor dicha era entablar coloquios con los trajinantes, refrescando su alma en aquel espiritual comercio con la España real, con la raza despojada de todo artificio y de las vanas retóricas cortesanas. ¿A qué precio dejasteis las cebás?... ¿No trujisteis hogaño más queso que en los meses pasados?... Soñé que llovían aguas del cielo a cantarazos por todo el campo de Calatrava. ¿Es verdad o soñación mía?... Mal debe de andar de corderos la tierra, pues casi todo lo que hoy he visto es de Extremadura. Vendiéronse los míos para Córdoba, y sólo quedaron tres machos de la última cría, y dos hembras que pedí para casa... Decidme vos: ¿ha parido ya la María Grijalva, de Peralvillo, que casó con el hijo de Santiago el Zurdo, mi compadre?... ¿Supisteis vos si al fin se tomó los dichos Tomasa, la de Caracuel, con el hijo de D. Roque Sendalamula, el escribano de Almodóvar? Hubieron puñaladas en la Venta de la tía Inés por mor de Francisquillo Mestanza, el de Puerto Lápice, y a poco no lo cuenta el novio, que es mi ahijado, y sobrino segundo de la tía de Bruno por parte de madre... ¡Ay qué arrope traéis acá, y con qué poco se contenta este Madrid tan cortesano! El que yo hacía para mis criados era mejor... Idvos, idvos pronto, que yo haría lo mesmo para no volver, si pudiera; este pueblo no es más que miseria con mucha palabrería salpimentada: engaño para todo, engaño en lo que se come, en lo que se habla, y hasta en los vestidos y afeites, pues hombres y mujeres se pegotean cosas postizas y enmiendan las naturales. ¿Qué hay en Madrid?,
