Inhaltsangabe: Einleitung: Bereits zu Lebzeiten des Autors ruft das Dekameron die Opposition des Klerus hervor. 1362 erscheint bei Boccaccio der Mönch Ciani und kündigt ihm auf Grund der Prophezeiung eines verstorbenen Mitbruders nahen Tod und Verdammnis an, falls er sein bisheriges Leben nicht ändere. Ohne das Einschreiten Petrarcas hätte Boccaccio sein Werk zerstört. Ein erster Höhepunkt der Verfolgung des Dekameron ist die von Savonarola veranstaltete öffentliche Verbrennung des Buches im Jahr 1477, sechs Jahre nach seinem Erstdruck. Ein erstes offizielles Verbot des Dekameron erläßt die Kirche erst 1559. Die drei nach dem Konzil von Trient erschienen zensierten Fassungen stellen eine deutliche Zäsur in der Editionsgeschichte des Dekameron dar. Niemals zuvor war es von seinen Herausgebern inhaltlich so stark verändert, ja entstellt und verstümmelt worden. Gleichzeitig waren aber die Ausgaben von 1573 und 1582 an den Stellen, an denen der Text von keinen Eingriffen betroffen war, die zuverlässigsten bis dahin erschienenen Drucke. Ihre Herausgeber Borghini und Salviati dokumentierten ihre textkritische Arbeit in Kommentarbänden, die zu den Höhepunkten der Boccaccio-Rezeption des Cinquecento gerechnet werden. Diese scheinbar widersprüchliche Behandlungsweise des Textes resultiert nur teilweise aus den unterschiedlichen Interessen, die die kirchlichen Autoritäten einerseits und die deren Bestimmungen Umsetzenden hatten: Zwar führten die deputati und ihr erster Vorsitzender Borghini die erste rassettatura nur widerstrebend aus, doch läßt sich nicht leugnen, daß ihre Nachfolger Salviati und Groto sich selbst darum bemüht hatten, mit der Revision des Werkes beauftragt zu werden, und dies, obwohl sie erklärte Bewunderer Boccaccios waren. Im späten Cinquecento war Boccaccios Sprache - nicht zuletzt dank der Autorität der Prose della volgar lingua Bembos - allgemein als vorbildlich für die italienische Prosa anerkannt.
