About the Book

The elegant yet sardonic comedian Bob Newhart, whose TV shows "The Bob Newhart Show" and "Newhart" were big hits in the 1970s and 1980s, passed away in Los Angeles on Thursday. He was ninety-four.

Publicist Jerry Digney stated that Newhart passed away following a string of brief illnesses.

Younger viewers may remember Newhart from his roles as Papa Elf in the 2003 Christmas classic "Elf," as well as from his 2013 guest star Emmy-winning appearance on "The Big Bang Theory," and most recently from his three appearances in "Young Sheldon" episodes.
In a statement, Chuck Lorre, the creator of "The Big Bang Theory," recalled Newhart, adding, "For years I begged Bob to appear on one of my shows." He refused requests without fail. However, after falling in love with "The Big Bang Theory," he said yes-but only under two conditions. First, there needed to be a multi-episode narrative for his character. Second, he aspired to be an Emmy winner. On both counts, we delivered. Working alongside a comic icon was an honor. A man of gentle nature and great skill in his field. I even got to refer to him as a buddy. "How fortunate am I?"
Newhart's comedy CDs were immensely popular before his TV fame because of their novel use of observational humor at the time. For more than twenty years, he dominated television. He appeared on "The Bob Newhart Show" as a perplexed Chicago psychotherapist and then on "Newhart" as a similarly unsuccessful New England innkeeper. From 1985 to 1987, he received three consecutive Emmy nominations best actor in a comedy. The two series ran for a total of 16 years, from 1972 to 1990, and were huge hits for CBS.

It is noteworthy to mention that he did not win his first Emmy until 2013, for a guest playing role on "The Big Bang Theory." The popular sitcom featured him in six episodes.

Explore the extraordinary life of comedy pioneer Bob Newhart, whose avant-garde performances and sardonic wit revolutionized the genre. This fascinating biography explores every aspect of the legendary career of Bob Newhart, from his modest upbringing in Oak Park, Illinois, to his ascent to fame following the release of the album "The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart."

Celebrate his endearing film appearances, his legendary roles in "The Bob Newhart Show" and "Newhart," and his enduring influence on the comedy industry. At the age of 94, Bob Newhart passed away on July 18, 2024, leaving a legacy of joy and laughter spanning more than six decades.
