About the Book

E. B. McKee's first book, DOC, chronicles adventures before, during, and after graduating from the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, in 1961. His self-deprecating and humorous style continues in Bloodletting to Binary. We rejoin McKee's medical journey upon his entrance into the USAF. In 1970, following his military discharge, with a wife, three children, and paltry bank balance, he establishes a private practice in southern Rhode Island. McKee's career spans an era when medicine undergoes fundamental changes: from leeches to computer diagnostics, DNA testing, and robotic surgery. Vignettes capture South County Hospital's bare-bone beginnings: rudimentary x-ray capability, a borrowed EKG machine, and limited lab resources. Growth from a converted private home to the gleaming edifice that exists today are fondly recalled. Hospital politics are on display. Watch the cadre of entrenched, older physicians circle the wagons to protect the status quo and slow the advance of specialist interlopers. Patients resist change too, fiercely loyal to the doctors who delivered their babies, performed their surgeries, set broken bones, and took care of their kids. Bloodletting to Binary is a physician's behind-the-scenes story of irascible colleagues; hospital dramas; and unforgettable patients, while offering a snapshot of a transformational period in American medicine.
About the Author: After graduation from the Royal College of Surgeons in 1961, Dr. McKee completed an internship and residency in Family Medicine at Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket R.I. Then, fulfilling an ROTC commitment, he entered the US Air Force, and was assigned to the 551st USAF Hospital at Otis AFB on Cape Cod, Mass., as a General Medical Officer. Subsequently he was chosen to attend the School of Aerospace Medicine in San Antonio, Texas. Upon completion of that program he returned to Otis AFB where he headed the Flight Surgeons office. Discharged from active military duty in 1966, he joined the medical staff of United Airlines working in Denver; Washington, D.C.; and New York. (Dr. McKee maintained a military affiliation and retired, after twenty years of service, as Hospital Commander of the 143rd Airlift Wing, R. I. Air National Guard.) Dr. McKee returned to R.I. in 1970 and established a family practice, became board-certified, and maintained the practice until 2000. During this time-span he also directed the occupational health program at the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics in R.I. Dr. McKee occupied a number of executive and clinical leadership positions at South County Hospital in Wakefield, R.I., and has enjoyed associations with various medical and civic organizations over the years. He is a member of the R.I. Air National Guard Society, Mensa, and the R.I. Historical Society. Dr. McKee was appointed Medical Director of an urgent care facility, a position he maintained until his retirement in 2013. Married and the father of five, Dr. McKee presently resides in Narragansett, R.I. Author contact: genem1@cox.net
