About the Book

The blackcurrant plant (Ribes nigrum) is a tiny deciduous shrub that comes from the family Grossulariaceae and is cultivated for its fruit. The sour and somewhat sweet blackcurrant berries are prized for the health benefits they provide due to their high vitamin C and antioxidant content. A quick rundown on growing blackcurrants:
1. Blackcurrants require mild summers and cold winters and are therefore best suited to places with these climatic conditions. Dormancy can be broken by exposing the plant to cold temperatures over the winter. During the growing season, temperatures between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius (59 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit) are optimal. It's ideal if the soil is rich in organic content, drains well, and is fertile.
2. Blackcurrant cultivars vary in productivity, fruit size, flavour, and disease resistance, so it's important to choose carefully. The selection of cultivars should take into account the local environment and market needs, but popular options include "Ben Sarek," "Ben Lomond," "Ben Connan," and "Titania."
3. Blackcurrants can be grown easily from bare-rooted plants or hardwood cuttings. It is best to collect hardwood cuttings from disease-free plants in late autumn or winter. They are then either started indoors in a greenhouse or planted outside in the early spring. Nurseries also sell rooted cuttings and bare-rooted plants for those who prefer to grow their own.
4. The recommended planting distances for blackcurrants are 1.5-2 meters (5-6.5 feet) between plants within a row, and 2-2.5 meters (6.5-8.2 feet) between rows. Plant at a depth that will leave only their bottom nodes above the soil line. There will be less chance of illness and more opportunity for fruit development if plants are spaced properly.
5. For best growth and harvests, blackcurrant bushes require consistent crop management. The following are some crucial facets of crop management:
- Blackcurrant plants require regular irrigation to ensure they receive enough water, especially during dry spells and when the fruit is ripening. Consistent water supply is typically provided by drip irrigation or sprinkler systems to mitigate waterlogging and drought stress.
- Soil fertility can only be preserved through consistent fertilizing practices. Soil analysis will reveal whether or not your plants need supplemental micronutrients in addition to the macronutrients nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Soil analysis can help determine the best time and amount of fertilizer to apply.
- To remove old wood, encourage new growth, and enhance airflow within the canopy, blackcurrants need to be pruned once a year. Pruning is most commonly done in the late winter or early spring, just before new growth appears.
- Preventing weeds from competing with crops for water and nutrients requires diligent weed control. Herbicides and mulching are both useful tools for weed control.
6. Prevention and control of pests and illnesses Blackcurrant plants are subject to aphids, spider mites, leaf spot, powdery mildew, and currant blister aphid, among others. Insecticides and fungicides can be used in conjunction with regular monitoring and IPM practices to control pests.
7. Blackcurrants are picked when they are fully ripe, at which point they have their fullest flavour. Berries are usually harvested by hand, with care taken to avoid damaging them throughout the plucking process. The collected berries can be eaten straight from the plant, frozen for later use, or turned into other goods such as jams, jellies, juices, and sweets.
