About the Book

Twenty years after slavery was abolished in Saudi Arabia, Adam Sneed, Jr., a project manager from Washington, D.C., is recruited by the U.S. government to work on a construction project in the desert Kingdom. Adam sees this offer as a great opportunity and arrives in Riyadh at the height of a determined drive by the Saudi royal family to bring the Bedouin nation into the 20th century. Adam is one of a handful of Black Americans working on the project but none of the westerners in the Kingdom realize the times of easy interaction between Americans and Middle Easterners will soon end. However, collaboration between Saudis and Americans will bring about a historical transformation of the desert Kingdom that will be viewed with awe and wonderment worldwide. Just beyond the horizon, war and terrorism lie ahead which will erupt suddenly and without warning. In the not too distant future Adam and his colleagues will be looking back on those days in Arabia with a mixture of fondness and sadness. For Adam it will become a wonderful dream absorbed and likely forgotten forever by history. Yet, this dream is powerful and worth remembering. It raises the question, will the Middle East ever witness peaceful relations between its citizens and westerners again? About the Author: I spent several years in the Middle East in the 1980s. It was a time of relative freedom of movement for westerners, which is not as possible today. I miss those times. The world has become more dangerous, yet I learned an important lesson during my time in the region. It is a fact that Muslims, Jews and Christians all accept that the first human was a man named Adam. Thusly it follows, that we are all brothers. Brothers do at times fight but we are also capable of loving one another. I am convinced that love is key to overcoming hatred and cultural bias. I made many friends in Saudi Arabia. We established bonds based on humanity and kindness and I truly love them all to this day. Black American in the Desert Kingdom is based on my experiences in Saudi Arabia, but there is no way I could ever relate all of what I saw and did, nor relate in detail all of the unforgettable personalities I met. What I have tried to do in this book is introduce some of these wonderful individuals through the characters in the book. It is my hope that those who read this story will enjoy the journey and realize our capacity as humans to overcome suspicions and distrust toward those we call strangers. Only by working together can we make this beautiful planet a place of peace and harmony for the sake of future generations.
