Jahrhundert die Fotografie erfunden wurde revolutionierte sie die bericht-erstattenden Medien nachhaltig. Erstmals war es möglich, die offensichtlich stark subjektiven Eindrücke der Journalisten mit Fotografien als scheinbar objektiven Be-weismitteln zu ergänzen. Nach der damals vorherrschenden Auffassung war die Fotografie etwas unmittelba-res, sich selbst erschaffendes, während für die bisher in Zeitungen üblichen Berichte und Zeichnungen stets die Zwischeninstanz des Beobachters nötig war. Henry Fox Talbot, einer der Pioniere der chemischen Fotografie, schrieb in den 1840er Jahren seine Gedanken über dieses neue Medium nieder, in denen er die Entstehung eines einzelnen Fotos als einen optischen und chemischen Prozess darstellt, der ohne fremde Einwirkung von statten geht. Seiner Meinung nach zeichnen sich die Motive durch die Reflexion von Licht in die Kamera selbst (vgl. Geimer 2010, S. 17). Charles S. Pierce erwähnt die Fotografie kurz in seiner Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts erschienenen Zeichentheorie. Auch er sieht ein direktes Verhältnis zwischen einer Fotografie und ihrem Motiv aufgrund der Projektion des kurzen Aufnahmemoments auf lichtempfindliches Material (vgl. ebd, S. 20ff). Folgt man diesen frühen Ansätzen, so entsteht der Eindruck, dass Fotografien nicht lügen könnten. Diese These ist natürlich überholt, wie heute allgemein bekannt ist. Die Manipulation von Fotos ist in etwa so alt wie die Fotografie selbst, schon früh wurden Positive nachbearbeitet, um sie besser verkaufen zu können (vgl. Deussen 2007, S. 33). Mit diesem Wissen sieht sich der einzelne Medienkonsument täglich mit der Frage nach der Authentizität der ihm präsentierten Pressefotografien konfron-tiert, und dies nicht nur beim Konsum von Boulevardzeitungen.
