Zur Poetologie bildnerischer Gestaltung in literarischen Texten Barbara Naumann untersucht in diesem Band die produktive Wirkung des Umgangs mit Bildern in Romanen des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts. Im Zentrum stehen Werke von Goethe, Victor Hugo, Gottfried Keller und W. G. Sebald und deren Auseinandersetzung mit Abbildungen, Fotografien und Tableaus. Nicht die klare Bildaussage fasziniert diese Autoren, sondern das Dunkle, Unbestimmte und Unscharfe. Dies heben die Texte hervor, wenn sie von Bildern und Bildakten sprechen; dies heben sie hervor, wenn sie Abbildungen zeigen. In den Romanen agieren beide Bildtypen als wirkungsmachtige Instanzen. Immer wieder ist es gerade der ratselhafte und prekare Bildcharakter, der fur die Romane und die Darstellung ihrer Konflikte fruchtbar wird. Die Romane Goethes, Hugos, Kellers, Sebalds schildern zahlreiche Szenen der Bildentstehung. Die Autoren nehmen die freie Bewegung der Hand, des Arms, den Farbverlauf der Tusche, die Bewegung der kritzelnden Feder auf dem Papier, das impulsive Wischen und Ausloschen in den Blick. Solche Malszenen enthalten zugleich die gegenlaufige Aktivitat: das kontrollierte Einzeichnen, das Schaffen einer Kontur oder einer Schrift. Produktion und Defiguration bzw. Entstellung gehen Hand in Hand. Dabei wird die Verwandtschaft des Bildakts mit dem Schreibakt deutlich. Wie haufig in Verwandtschaftsverhaltnissen, so bringt auch diejenige zwischen Bild und Text den Wunsch nach gegenseitiger Abgrenzung hervor. Es sind gerade die bildfreudigen Texte, die eine Bildkritik entwickeln. Und auf die Bildkritik des Romans antwortet oft sehr schnell die offenkundige Schriftkritik des Bildes. Schriftkritik und Bildkritik konnen sich gegenseitig bedingen. Barbara Naumann erkundet die dunklen, ratselhaften, unscharfen und die sich in Bewegung auflosenden Bilder im Roman. Ihre Auseinandersetzung mit dem Bild gibt Einblicke frei in den konfliktreichen Entstehungszusammenhang der grossen erzahlenden Texte.
About the Author: Barbara Naumann ist Professorin fur Neuere deutsche Literatur an der Universitat Zurich und Herausgeberin der Zeitschrift 'figurationen'. Zu ihren Interessen und Forschungsgebieten gehort in erster Linie das Verhaltnis der Literatur zu anderen Kunsten.
