Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2003 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 1, Philipps-Universität Marburg (Institut für Neuere Deutsche Literatur und Medien), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die Bildende Kunst in Wien um 1900 ist wesentlich von der Wiener Secession geprägt, deren Entstehung im Jahre 1897 für großes Aufsehen sorgte. Diese Vereinigung von neunzehn jungen Künstlern wollte die Kunst im Sinne des Jugendstils erneuern. Mit ihrem Ausstellungsgebäude errichteten die Secessionisten 1898 ein Aufmerksamkeit erregendes Monument dieser neuen Stilrichtung und schufen gleichzeitig den geeigneten Rahmen für viele erfolgreiche Ausstellungen. Stellvertretend für die Gattung Architektur soll in dieser Arbeit das Wiener Secessionsgebäude auf seine damalige Neuartigkeit besonders in Abgrenzung zum vorherrschenden Historismus untersucht werden. Mit seinen Ausstellungen war es Teil des von den Secessionisten geforderten "Gesamtkunstwerks". In Betrachtung einzelner, herausragender Ausstellungen sollen wichtige künstlerische Persönlichkeiten und Ideen der Wiener Secession vorgestellt werden. Bei deren Präsentation und gleichzeitiger Auseinandersetzung mit veralteten Strukturen in der Kunstszene war die Secessionszeitung Ver Sacrum maßgeblich. Kunstzeitungen ermöglichten einerseits das Übertragen künstlerischer Ideen in Wort und Bild, andererseits boten sie sympathisierenden Schriftstellern, Architekten und Philosophen die Gelegenheit, sich zu äußern. Besonders die Jugendstilbewegung in Wien war eingebettet in ein reges literarisches, musikalisches und gesellschaftliches Leben. Man hatte Beziehungen zu zeitgenössischer Literatur von Peter Altenberg, Herrmann Bahr, Rainer Maria Rilke oder Arthur Schnitzler. Ebenso war man an der Musik von Gustav Mahler, Arnold Schönberg und Alban Berg interessiert.
