Damit dieses Ziel erreicht werden kann, muss der Begriff Big Data zunächst charakterisiert und die damit verbundenen Technologien vorgestellt werden. Darauf aufbauend muss der Wertschöpfungsprozess in einem klassischen SCM untersucht werden, um ein mögliches Einsatzszenario für Big Data zu identifizieren. Dazu werden die Elemente des Wertschöpfungsprozesses in einer Supply Chain betrachtet, um Problemfaktoren gegenüber den sich veränderten Erfordernissen aufzuzeigen. Entlang dieses Prozesses und den identifizierten Problemfaktoren wird Big Data auf seine Einsatzmöglichkeiten untersucht. So kann eruiert werden, wie Big Data im SCM zielführend eingesetzt werden kann, um eine Verbesserung im Bereich der Problemfaktoren zu bewirken und folglich Mehrwerte für den Wertschöpfungsprozess zu schaffen. Unternehmerische Entscheidungen werden immer häufiger auf Grundlage der Erkenntnisse aus Datenanalysen getroffen. Eine nutzbringende Erhebung und Analyse dieser Datenmengen wird für Unternehmen jedoch zunehmend schwieriger, um daraus wertschöpfende Informationen ableiten zu können. Damit aus diesen Datenmengen ein wirtschaftlicher Nutzen gewonnen werden kann, müssen bestehende Strukturen überarbeitet und die Möglichkeiten der Datenverarbeitung und Informationsgewinnung in unternehmerische Prozesse integriert werden. Diese Arbeit thematisiert die daraus resultierende Problemstellung für das Supply-Chain-Management (SCM) in Industrieunternehmen.
